The Abraham Lincoln Friendship Train started in Lincoln, Nebraska picking up food for Europe. It began in Los Angeles and worked its way east. This grassroots effort began during the time the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe was underway. The Friendship Train also inspired imitations. These were mostly local or regional initiatives like the New Rochelle Friendship Train organized by the citizens of that city, or the Friend Ship, which carried food and clothing from New Englanders to the people of the British Isles, or the Friendship Caravan of food from Michigan to France. The largest and, most successful of these initiatives was a Midwestern effort, the Abraham Lincoln Train, which began its journey on Lincoln's birthday, February 12, 1948, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Sponsored by the Christian Rural Overseas Program and, backed by the Farm Bureau Federation, the Lincoln Train raised another 150 boxcars of food and clothing for the people of Western Europe. This image was taken when the train stopped at Wabash Station, 10th and Monroe Streets in Springfield, Illinois.
