The Carmody Family Farm 1879-2005 Terrence Carmody arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, from Ireland, in 1855 at the age of 28. He worked for the railroad and eventually lived in Atlanta, Illinois. He was married in Bloomington, Illinois in 1863. In 1879 he and his wife traveled by handcar from Atlanta to Towanda and purchased the farm 4-1/4 miles east of Towanda. They had 11 children of which 3 died very young. Terrence died in 1909 and his eldest son, Edward J. inherited the farm. His other sons also inherited land he had acquired in the area. Edward J. and his son, Clarence, farmed the land until Edward J. died in 1943. Clarence and his son, Robert, farmed together until Clarence's death in 1969. Robert, the 4th generation still lives on the farm and maintains the land. His son, Edward J. is also involved in the farming operation with his father.
