TEE DEPARTMENT'S OPERATION stems from the regular monthly Trustee's meeting, and the regular Firemen's meetings (held twice month-ly during summer months and once monthly dur-ing winter months). The Trustees and Chiefs also attend the monthly meeting of the McLean Coun-ty Fireman's Association, The fire house, its me-chanical equipment, and the fire trucks are check-ed twice weekly through use of a. "signed check sheet." The trucks are started and run for twenty minutes during each inspection. THE DEPARTMENT'S TRAINING has many facits. One meeting per, month in the summer is used to operate all phases of the equipment in the field under simulated conditions. Part of each meeting in the winter is used for training in the handling of the equipment. Special training is received during regular meetings from such experts as the County Civil Defense Director, fire equipment representatives, and formal edu-cators such as the representative of the Univer-sity of Illinois Fire Extension Bureau.
Leaders in the field give presentations at the monthly county meetings, where the State Fire Marshall has given talks on training, represen-tatives of the Fire Bureau have put on presenta-tions on arson, and leading attorneys have dis-cussed a department's legal liability, etc. The County Fireman's Association puts on fre-quent house burnings. Houses that have been do-nated are set on fire, in ten to twenty different ways, and various units put them out with each effort being reviewed and analyzed by those present. Donald Story, your Chief, has attended the one week fire college put on by the University of Illinois. COMMUNICATIONS START WHEN THE FIRE PHONE RINGS. At the present time phones ring simultaneously at the 24 hour Pure Truck Stop and at the Fire House. The siren is rung from the Pure Truck Stop,
1000 GALLON TANKER COST $9,280.95
750 GALLON PUMPER COST $18,807.00
Equipment on order (and to be installed within two weeks) will activate sixteen different fire-men's phones at the same time the fire phone rings. If any fireman's phone is in use a buzzer will sound that will be clearly audible to those on the line. The trustees have a current annual budget of $6,700.00 and hope to have enough money left out of funds on hand to be able to purchase radio equipment in the spring. ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT IS AVAILABLE TO YOUR DEPARTMENT through one of the finest mutual aid programs in the state. This means, simply, that in the event we need addi-tional tankers or pumpers we need only to call any of the eight surrounding departments by phone or radio and there will be no charge for their assistance. THESE DEPARTMENTS WILL ONLY RESPOND TO A CALL FROM THE CHIEF IN CHARGE, NOT A CALL FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC. If your department is call-ed upon to send one of its vehicles to another dis-trict, it automatically sends a standby alert to all other neighboring departments.
EACH ROAD IN THE DISTRICT AND EACH HOUSE WILL BE ASSIGNED A NUMBER. The department's numbering of each house has been delayed awaiting the formal approval of the new county-wide road numbering system. This system has now been approved, and every county road has been assigned a letter and a number. Your trustees have ordered aerial photographs of the entire district, and upon receipt will be able to assign a number to each existing residence out of the 48 that are available for each side of a section. PHONE STICKERS are on order, and upon re-ceipt will be mailed to every resident in the dis-trict. They bear the fire phone number, have a blank for the house number to be assigned, carry the Sheriff's number, and have a blank for a doc-tor's number. WE NEED YOUR HELP! ! It is felt that your fire department is off to a good start. YOUR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. WHY NOT JOIN THE DEPARTMENT OR ITS LADIES' AUXILIARY? If interested, just con-tact any member or his wife.
