Pictured left to right : Willard A. Kates , Rose Leal , Jeanette R. Shirra and Anthony T. Kates. Willard A. Kates (June 21 , 1901 to December 29 , 1990) was born in Illinois to Anthony T. Kates and Mary Catherine (Shirra) Kates. He had two sisters : Helen and Margaret. He attended Northwestern Military Academy in Lake Geneva and the University of Wisconsin (Madison). He was the founder of the William A. Kates Co. in Deerfield , Illinois , a flow regulator manufacturing company. Anthony Thomas Kates was born in October 1853 in Indiana. He married Mary Catherine in 1895 and they had three children : Helen , Margaret and Willard A. Mr. Kates started a hardware business in 1890 with his friend Richard Bray , but they also assembled milk cans in the back of the store. When the milk can business expanded , they constructed the Bray & Kates factory which manufactured dairy containers until 1921. The business was sold to Creamery Package Company in 1921 , at which time he entered the oil business. Mr. Kates also served on the Arlington Heights High School Board in 1923.
