Description |
H. C. Paddock is pictured on the far right with his children (left to right): David, Lucile, Daisy and Jeanette. Hosea Cornish (H. C.) Paddock was born in Western, Oneida County, New York, on August 5, 1852. He spent his childhood on a farm near Prophetstown, Illinois, and graduated from Lyndon High School in 1870. After receiving a state teacher’s certificate at the college in Normal, Illinois, he became principal of the schools at Momence also in Illinois. During this time he met Janette Styles and they were married on June 30, 1880. The couple had six children: Stuart R., Charles S., Lucile, Daisy, Jeanette and David. Mr. and Mrs. Paddock settled in Plainfield, Illinois, where they conducted a private school. They later moved to Chicago when Mr. Paddock took a position with Rand McNally & Co. in 1882. His newspaper work began when he was 16, acting as a country correspondent for the Sterling Gazette, Morrison Sentinel, Sterling Standard, Fulton Journal and Prophetstown Spike. His involvement with journalism took a professional turn when, in succession, he bought the Wheaton Illinoian, Rochelle Register, Waukegan Register and the Lake County Independent. In 1898, he purchased the Palatine Enterprise and the following year he acquired the Cook County Herald in Arlington Heights. In 1901, he bought the Bensenville Record and Itasca Herald. He consolidated six papers under 3 heads: Cook County Herald, Palatine Enterprise and DuPage Register. On November 13, 1922, Mr. Paddock sold his interests in the newspapers to his sons Charles S. and Stuart R. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights for over 20 years, teaching Sunday school there and in other towns as well. He died in November 1935 and is buried in Randhill Park Cemetery in Arlington Heights, Illinois, alongside his wife who died in May 1931.
