Virgil Horath on the left is shaking hands with former Illinois Governor Richard Ogilvie. Virgil was born about 1909 in Watson , Illinois. He came to Arlington Heights in 1929 in his 1928 Ford , with twelve dollars in is pocket. He found a job at the Creamery Packaging Co. and worked at the factory for five years. He married Helen in 1931 and they lived in an apartment above Reeses’ Hardware Store. Helen was working at Sears , Roebuck and Company in Chicago. Virgil got a part-time job at a service station. Later , he purchased the Shell station at Belmont Avenue and Northwest Highway and ran it for 31 years. In the 1940s , while Virgil was serving in the Navy , Helen ran the service station. Virgil joined the Lions Club and served as president from 1943 to 1945. He also became a member of the Burlington , Wisconsin and the Genoa City , Wisconsin Lions Clubs. He was member of the American Legion Post 208 and he was on the board of the Arlington Federal Savings and Loan for 23 years and Chairman of the Board from 1970 to 1976. He and Helen were founding members the Arlington Heights Historical Society. In 1967 , he persuaded Miss Adeline Muller to sell her home at the corner of Fremont Street and Vail Avenue to the Historical Society for $32,000. When the museum opened November 24 , 1968 , Virgil became the first director. Because of his work in Arlington Heights , Virgil was inducted into the Arlington Heights Hall of Fame on September 30 , 1988 , and died October 19 of the same year. After his death , Helen donated a fountain in his name in 1990 at North School Park located at Arlington Heights Road and Eastman Street. Helen was also very involved in community affairs and when she died August 8 , 2000 , was the last of the founding members of the Arlington Heights Historical Society.
