John Lewis Brooks: Minister and farmer, known as Elder Brooks.
Born in Boston Massachusetts, September 24, 1817; he came to Lake County in
1845,settling in Chicago several years before, returned to New York and
studied for the Baptist ministry. He took up eighty acres in Cuba Township,
which he sold in 1855 and purchased one hundred and twenty acres in the
northern part of the same township, where he lived until his death, June 3,
1900. He retired from the ministry in 1893. He was married (near
Wauconda) December 25, 1848, to Mary A., daughter of Walter and Nancy Ann
Winch. They were the parents of three children who are now living.
Florence M. (Paddock), E. W. Brooks, Postmaster at Wauconda, and Ella G.
(Williams). Elder Brooks was the son of William Brooks and Abigail
