Graham physician brings ‘scarless’ surgery to hospital: Graham Medical Group physician Dr. L. Matthew Deppe who is a general surgeon performed and assisted in the first single-incision gallbladder removals at Graham Hospital recently. The procedure, one of the first series in Central Illinois, uses a newly developed “scarless” surgical technique. This uniquely advanced surgical method involves making one small incision in the belly button (where it will not be visible) in order to avoid the traditional surgical scars in the abdomen. It is newly being offered in order to remove the gallbladder, but has been used at some centers to remove the appendix, ovaries, and uterus, and other organs. The single-incision surgical procedure is very effective when used in the appropriate patients and designed to limit scarring, reduce post-surgery pain and shorten recovery time. Dr. L. Matthew Deppe joined Graham Medical Group in 2008. He is specially trained and has a keen interest in minimally invasive surgery and gastroenterologic medical and surgical techniques.
