New Liberty Ship Given Name of the Founder of Evanston.
A Liberty ship launched last week at Richmond, Cal. was christened "The John Evans" in honor of the late Dr. Evans, one of the founders '/, Northwestern and the man for whom Evanston was named.
It was Dr. Evans, among the nine founders of the university, who took the initiative in acquiring the extensive wooded tract which became the Northwestern campus, and during those early days (in the 1850's) he played important part in development of the young village which sprang into being with the new university.
Dr. Evans later served as territorial governor of Colorado, upon appointment by Pres. Lincoln, and won prominence, too, as a builder of railroads. Not only was Evanston named in Dr. Evans' honor, but also the cities of Evans, Colo., and Evanston, Wyo.
Another recent honor was accorded Dr. Evans when the new religious center at Northwestern was also given his name. The center is housed in the former Rufus Dawes home at 1800. Sheridan road and serves as a headquarters for the various campus religious groups.
The Liberty ship named for Dr. Evans is the third vessel to be named recently for persons associated with Northwestern. The others were named for Ensign Harald J. Christopher, who died at his station aboard the U.S.S. Nevada during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Ensign Gus. G. Bebas, bomber pilot who was killed in action last August:'
