Dear Melvin:' '
Enjoyed talking to you while I was home during the Xmas holidays. Thank you for letting me know how to touch bases with some of the East Coast Evanstonians. I know that CCC NEWSETTE has existed for some time but just never got around to subscribing until now. The issues I have received so far this year have been like a letter from home.
Even though I have been away for almost 20 years it's good to hear the Evanston news. Enclosed is my subscription' for one year. Sorry it's late. I am looking forward to future issues of the Newsette. P. S.:
Last nite I was informed of the death of Bernice Freeman Brooks, my aunt by marriage. , and mother of Marianne Gaines. I will miss her very much, and always remember her smiling face. kindness and warmth. She was, truly a wonderful person.
Have a good year. Thank you,
DENISE L. (WATSON) SMITH~ Arlington, VA.
CCC PUBLICITOR'S COMMENT
Place on your "EVANSTONIANS EAST" list of potential participants the name of MRS. ~~THJI. M. BURTON. 5 Kennedy St., NE, Washington, De 20011. She's known as Martha in De, but Evanstonians will remember her as EDNA HILLER. formerly of 1930 Brown, here. GET THIS: She left town in 1946, 36 years ago for Washington De and. amazingly, in' all three years she end WILLIAM (BILL) POL~ LARD have lived there and never met--the only thing DC "transients" seem to have in common is the Champion Washington Redskins! We gave her Bill Poliard's Address, which is 8233 West Beach Terrace, Wash DC 20012" since Washingtonians, understandably seem to have an aversion to listing their phone number-s publicly. We hope we are able to get the "Evanstonians Eat," connection established in time for a delightful reunion this summer. As a live wire, we hope we can
Count on your help. Thanks

Thanks for your support! The Girl Scouts. (Illinois Shore Girl Scout Council)
, Wilmette, Illinois CCC PUBLICITOR'S COMMENT:
'It was our birthday, Feb.1, without their knowing it. that the Girl Scouts gave '~s a huge package of seven varieties of cookies now on sale by the, Girl Scouts of Evanston and the North Shore. Although all of them meet our prescribed cholesterol diet, we presented them instead 'to the YWCA DAY CARE
(SEE next COLLUMN)
program, directed by ~UUMIE EDENS;so the pre-school age toddler would have a delicious, 'nutritious post-nap snack. In the meantime, we hope all our subscribers will remember to purchase the Girl Scout cookies to assure a super summer of camping and guidance provided only by concerned Girl Scout counseling.
Dear Melvin,
I think I'm a little late with my renewal check. Forgot--do you think it might be old age senility and things like that? (laugh). Do with the extra what will make you happy. Best wishes.
MABLE GIBBS Evanston
CCC PUBLICITOR'S COMMENT:
No senility. Since you left Sherman av. yours has been a perfect record of support, which helps us to service all our community, whether or not they appreciate our efforts. Thanks so much.

Dear Mel--
Here is my two-year subscription renewal. Best regards, JIM--
J!~S H. & ELLEN E. PEOPLES Evanston
CCC PUBLICITOR'S COMMENT:
We hope you read last week's and this week's Richard Thompson's 1881 response to the question of black publications' role in the elevation of blacks. If not then re-read it, for it mirrors exactly today's strivings, ignoring financial advantages for individuals. You may not realize that your self-styled "renewal" sends your CCC expiration date through February, 1986!You've overpaid, setting a supreme example for all the others who have underpaid, when we just appreciate everyone's just paying up to help out. For being so far ahead of the game Thank you.
'Dear Mel,
I ‘m~ well--a little forgetful. Didn’t make my 'yearly· payment. Forgive me for being late. Here is a little extra (Hogwash ) I'm a bit tired of reading all of the same excuses the readers are handing you. Never mind the lame excuses--send in your subscription. Stop crying: Pay as if it were your mortgage note, auto or charge cards. Just send the dough. If you can't send in a few hundred dollars stop saying here is a little extra. Stop fishing for compliments. Swell Mel's heart with your new and old subscription payments Sincerely
MRS. CCC #5050215
CCC PUBLICITOR'S COMMENT:
Oooh, that's a bit, rough True, some of them delay paying, but they far surpass those who do not respond at all. Always, we're grateful for their being eagerly concerned and committed as you are about meeting an obligation they don't need as much as they do their heat, gas, auto or utility bills. It's nice to know though that they'd feel, as you do that getting information is also quite important.
