ASK THE DOCTOR By Carl E. Hill, M. D.
near Dr. Hill: WILL HEAVY DRINKING CAUSE YOUR BLOOD PP.ESSURE TO GO UP? Mr. R. S.
Dear Mr. R. S.: Recent medical studies have shown an association between excessive alcohol consumption and elevated blood pressure. The serious complications of high blood pressure (especially strokes) also seem to be common amonq heavy drinkers. A heavy drinker is defined as one who consumes five or more drinks per day, a drink being a 12-ounce can of beer or one ounce of 80% proof whiskey, or a four-ounce glass of table wine.
The underlying cause for the rise in blood pressure due to alcohol is unknown at this time. It has been observed that when alcohol intake is stopped, the blood pressure gradually will fall to within normal levels. Resumption of drinking gradually leads to a rise in blood pressure.
It has been estimated that from 10% to as much as one third of so-called hypertensive patients may be hypertensive due to excessive consumption of alcohol. Many patients who are diagnosed as having high blood pressure do not respond to their medication because of their heavy drinkins.

AN INCOME TO YOUR FAMIL Y
If you are the family breadwinner, take a minute to consider how much income your family would need to keep going if you should die. For example, they would need money for food, clothing, the rent or the mortgage, funeral expenses and other debts and expenses, including estate and inheritance taxes.
Would your wife or husband have enough income to see her or him through until the children are grown? And how about her/his own support afterwards until old age payments start?
Even now your family needs protection against emergencies and other unexpected expenses. And there is the question of providing funds for your children's college education, plus for your own retirement.
I can show you how to plan today for your famil y's security--tomorrow--to protect it against some of life's major financial hazards.

Thank you, Marvin Walker.
