John Evans Chapel Named to Honor Dean J. A. James
The new James Chapel in the John Evans Religious center, 1800 Sheridan road, was dedicated Monday in honor of Dr. James A. James, dean emeritus of the Northwestern university graduate school.
The dedication and presentation was conducted by Pres. J. Roscoe Miller of the university and the Rev. Walter D. Wagoner, chaplain of the university gave the address of reception in behalf of the center.
Dr. James. 2127 Orrington Avenue, now 88, was professor of history from 1897 to 1923 and dean of the graduate school from 1913 to 1931. He held the William Smith Mason chair of American history from 1923 to 1935. He is secretary of the John R. Lindgren Foundation for the Promotion of International Peace and Christian Unity and is helping to arrange for the World Council of Churches meeting to be held in Evanston in 1954.
Dr. James was recently elected an honorary life member of the Evanston Historical society and also of the Chicago Historical society, which he has served as trustee and vice president.
