1. In accordance with reference (a), it is recommended that AMANTI, Frank Lawrence, 302 61 90, Machinist's Mate Third Class, US Navy attached to and serving in the USS Norris, be awarded the Commendation Ribbon for outstanding and meritorious service as set forth below.
2. a. During the period 23 August 1950 to 7 February 1951, while serving as Machinist's Mate Third Class in the USS Norris, the subject man's diligence and tireless devotion to duty, coupled with his outstanding mechanical ability, has commanded the spontaneous admiration and respect of his superior officers and his shipmates. During the period cited above, the USS Norris participated in the Formosa Patrol (23 August 1950 to 31 October 1950); served with Task Force 77 (7 November 1950 to 7 February 1951); provided gunfire support during the HUNGNAM, KOREA, evacuation on 23-24 December 1950; destroyed floating mines; and accomplished the rescue of 19 Korean refugees from a small boat rendered helpless by storm.
b. Throughout these operations, AMANTI's tireless and enthusiastic devotion to duty has been most notable. His dogged determination to complete difficult assignments and to initiate them has been remarkable. When the sonar gear of this ship was rendered inoperable by failure of a high speed gear, compounded of metal and fiber, and no spare part was available in the Task Force, AMANTI was able to wholly fabricate the necessary parts, including the precision fiber gear, on the engine lathe. All the other machinists aboard consider this task impossible He has, similarly repaired vital operational equipment including the air search radar, in addition to performing his routine assignments in an outstanding manner.
c. It is considered that AMANTI's action throughout the operations described above are worthy of special recognition and the award of the Commendation Ribbon is strongly recommended.
