TOGETHER WE CAN PROTECT AND ENHANCE THE ENVIRONMENT OF ILLINOIS
What if my shop sends its waste
off site to a Treatment, Storage,
and Disposal Facility (TSDF)?
If you generate more than 220 pounds
per month of hazardous waste and your
shop contracts out to have its waste
shipped off site, Illinois regulations
require you to complete a Hazardous
Waste Manifest, or a contractual agree-ment,
that is used to track the transport
of hazardous waste from the generator
to the designated TSDF. Copies of the
manifests must be kept on file for
3 years. If your shop generates less
than 220 pounds per month of hazard-ous
waste, a hazardous waste manifest
is not necessary. See the “How Do I
Manage My Hazardous Waste?” fact
sheet for more details.

tires for recycling. If you store over 50 used tires on
your property, you must notify the Illinois EPA. In
addition, if you store more than 250 used tires out-side
or 1,300 used tires inside you must register
and pay a $100.00 fee with Illinois EPA.
How do I manage my hazardous waste?
The regulations that affect your shop are based on
how much hazardous waste you generate. The fol-lowing
bullets describe the three hazardous waste
generator categories.
C Generate less than 220
pounds (100 kilograms) of haz-ardous
waste per month
C Generate a total of 220 to 2,200
pounds (100 to 1,000 kilo-grams)
of hazardous waste per
month
C Generate over 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilo-grams)
of hazardous waste per month
If you have questions concerning the amount of waste
your shop produces, contact the Office of Small
Business for more information.
What if I generate less than 220 pounds of
hazardous waste per month?
Most automotive repair and autobody shops
generate less than 220 lbs. per month of hazardous
waste. If you generate less than 220 lbs. per month,
the following requirements apply to you:
4 Identify all hazardous waste that you generate.
4 Hire a licensed special waste hauler to transport
your hazardous waste to a facility permitted to
receive hazardous waste. To obtain a list of
Illinois-licensed special waste haulers and
permitted facilities, call the Office of Small
Business.
4 Do not accumulate more than 1,000 kilograms
(2,200 pounds) of hazardous waste on your
property at any time.
4 Store all hazardous waste in containers such as
drums.
What if I generate 220 pounds or more of
hazardous waste per month?
If your shop generates 220 to 2,200 lbs. per month
of hazardous waste certain regulations apply
specifically to you. You must:
C Obtain an EPA Identification Number
indicating waste generator status
C Store hazardous waste on site for less than
180 days
C Affix all hazardous waste storage containers
with “Hazardous Waste” labels and
accumulation start dates
C Maintain hazardous waste containers in good
condition without cracks, bulges, dents, or
leaks; containers must be compatible with
waste (corrosive wastes should not be in steel
containers unless they are lined with
corrosion-resistant material);
