purchase a snowmobile trail use
sticker if the snowmobile is not
registered in Illinois. The fee for
a yearly snowmobile trail-use
sticker is $25 for a person who is
not a resident of Illinois and who
operates a snowmobile within
Illinois if the snowmobile is not
registered in Illinois. Trail passes
will be available at DNR license
vendors throughout the state
beginning in the fall of 2011.
The new law also includes a
mandatory liability insurance
provision: Other than a person
operating a snowmobile on
their own property that is not a
posted snowmobile trail, and
other than a person operating a
snowmobile on property other
than a posted snowmobile trail
in which the owner of the

Live eagle cam
Pere Marquette State Park, in
cooperation with the Two
Rivers National Wildlife Refuge,
Grafton Technologies, Inc., the
Friends of Pere Marquette State
Park Foundation and other local
supporters, has installed a cam-era
on an active bald eagle nest
near the park in Jersey County.
The nest is approximately 17
years old and measures 6 feet
across, 2.5 feet deep and is near-ly
100 feet above ground. The
pair of eagles at the nest laid
at the Pere Marquette Visitor
Center, Mon. through Sat. from
9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and Sun. from
10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The eagle
nest is located within the Two
Rivers National Wildlife Refuge.
No eastern
cougars
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Ser-vice
has concluded an exten-sive
review of all available infor-mation
about the eastern
cougar, which is on the endan-gered
species list. Though many
people report seeing cougars in
the east, biologists have found
no scientific evidence of the
eastern cougar subspecies since
the late 1930s and have conclud-ed
that the subspecies known as
eastern cougar is extinct. The

CWD update
The Department of Natural
Resources continues its
fight to manage chronic wast-ing
disease, a fatal disease of
the nervous system that affects
deer, elk and moose. As of the
printing of this publication,
Illinois’ surveillance program
has identified a total of 327 con-

firmed cases of chronic wasting
disease since the fall of 2002.
So far this year (July 1, 2010 to
present), 33 cases have been
found, with five cases showing
up in three new counties:
Grundy, Kane and Jo Daviess.
However, the core area of the
disease remains along the Win-nebago
and Boone County line,
with 70 percent of all CWD
cases falling within an 8-mile
wide area centering along the
Winnebago and Boone County
line, extending down to north-west
DeKalb County.
Snowmobile law
changes
On April 1, 2011, changes to
the Illinois Snowmobile Reg-istration
and Safety Act approved
last fall will take effect. Fees for
all new snowmobile registra-tions,
transfer renewals, and
renewals will cost $30 (old regis-tration
application forms will be
accepted as long as the new fee
is remitted). The amended Act
property has given permission
to operate a snowmobile on the
property, no person shall oper-ate,
register or maintain regis-tration
of a snowmobile unless
the snowmobile is covered by a
liability insurance policy, pur-suant
to Section 7-203 of the
Illinois Vehicle Code.
Outdoors-Woman registration open
The Department of Natural Resources is offering a Becoming
an Outdoors-Woman program at Lorado Taft Field Campus
near Oregon June 10-12. The $200 registration fee includes four
classes, five meals, housing, materials, giveaways, prizes and use
of class equipment. Registration for new participants began
March 22 and opens for returning participants April 5. Space is
limited so register early. For information, a registration form

exhibition and originated in the
west or in South America. A pro-posal
is under way to remove
the eastern cougar from the
endangered species list. For
