Copy of draft of letter written by Elmer Smith to F. F, Hall, October 1929.
Perhaps you think I have forgotten all about the 50th anniversary of our Library, but I assure you I haven't. My wife and I have discussed it more or less since our last board meeting up to the present time. After a lapse of 50 years things don't come back to you as readily as you wish and especially days and dates, librarians and locations in consecutive order.
However on the Sunday afternoon (Sept.29) following our last meeting, my wife and I drove to Elgin to see Henry Bauman as we knew he was perhaps more familiar with our Library in its early days than anyone else. We did not find him at the address given in the last telephone directory. When we got home I called him by phone but "Central" told me his phone had been disconnected. Still believing him to be our best source of information I sat down and wrote him a letter which I mailed Monday morning, Sept. 30
