Post of Rolla, MO
Camp Lacky
July
From W.W. Jones Jr. to W.W. Jones Sr., Towanda, Illinois
As I was a little short of paper I seized on this piece with the song Col. Lacky is drilling us in Battallion drill every day- We have just the best drilled company in the regiment.
Pushy says he would like you to tell Poperive to write once in a while. He likes to hear his name called on the letter list once in a while – as well as the rest- and give his compliments to the young ladies of Towanda.
John Miller and Tom Minerare still at Benton Barracks. We expect them to be here this week. John is getting able for duty. Tom Miner is recovering slowly. I got a letter from John yesterday.
As I had a chance to get a song of Rolla guard house, I thought I would write some more and you might have left there.
It is sung by a lot of fells in the guard house who have been put in for various crimes. Some have been in for eight months and some are the most wicked fellows I ever saw.
The song was composed by a fellow who has been in for eight months. He sings it to the tune of Hard Times.
Our regiment don’t have any guard house or any guard around us only at night, and they are to keep the guerrillas from sniping us.
I was on guard the other night and was going around with the whip when there came a bullet whizzing up over our heads. The officer went in the direction of the fireline and I went around with the relief. As soon as the relief was posted, I went with the officer to one of the guard near where the gun was fired and found that someone had fired a shot thru the guard’s tent that was guarding a well, but did not fire quite low enough to hit the guard who was lying on the inside.
We got some men and looked around and searched a house nearby but could find no one- then doubled the guard at the well and one of the guards said he seen someone in the bushes, and fired again, and they were bothered no more that night.
You said it was very dry and hot. I don’t think it is much warmer here than it is up there, or at least it don’t seem any warmer. It may be because we have nothing to do only to sit in the shade and read or sleep.
The people are harvesting here. Of harvest- you might call it 4 or 5 acres. They don’t have any reapers here. We have had a very nice shower of rain every 4 or five days.
Write soon.
Yours,
W.W. Jones (Jr.)
