Description
Photograph of the Rose Tavern in the Niles Center Hotel in Niles Center , Illinois prior to 1910. Shown : unidentified picnickers standing outside of the Rose Tavern. The Niles Center Hotel was built by Fritz Rose at the southeast corner of Oakton Street and Lincoln Avenue in the 1900's. The hotel also housed the office of George F. Nixon ; a dance hall on the second floor ; and rooms used as a boarding house. It was destroyed by fire in 1912. The picnic groves seen in background right were owned by Henry Harms. Original caption reads : "Harms Building [sic] held parties and gatherings that featured affairs of the Village. " Note the Schlitz Beer sign on side of building. This photograph appears on page 62 of Skokie , 1888-1988 : A Centennial History , which is available online http://skokiecentennialbook.com .
