Description
Portrait photograph of Peter Blameuser , Jr. , circa 1855. An immigrant from Prussia , Peter Blameuser , Jr. settled in Niles Township in 1865. Blameuser quickly established himself as a builder ; landlord and landowner , a merchant , and a saloon owner. Among his other many accomplishments were: donating the land for St. Peter Catholic Church and dividing large areas of the original town into private lots. In 1876 , Blameuser purchased a building on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Oakton Street from Peter Bergmann ; henceforth to be known as the Blameuser Building. The Blameuser Building became an important site of commerce in the area. This photograph appears on page 36 of Skokie , 1888-1988 : A Centennial History , which is available online http://skokiecentennialbook.com .
