#001 The Worlds Congress Auxiliary Scrapbook, p. 0150 Tune--Hamburg. 1 O, sometimes gleams upon our sight, Through present wrong, the Eternal Right! And step by step since time began, We see the steady gain of man;-- That all of good the past hath had Remains to make our own time glad, Our common daily life divine, And every land a Palestine. Through the harsh noises of our day A low, sweet prelude finds its way; Through clouds of doubt, and creeds of fear A light is breaking, calm and clear. Henceforth my heart shall sigh no more For olden time and holier shore; God's love and blessing, then and there, Are now, and here, and everywhere. J. G. WHITTIER. Tune--NUREMBURG. 2 Life of Ages, richly poured, Love of God, unspent and free, Flowing in the Prophet's word And the People's liberty. Never was to chosen race That unstinted tide confined; Thine is every time and place, Fountain sweet of heart and mind! Breathing in the thinker's creed, Pulsing in the hero's blood, Nerving simplest thought and deed. Freshening time with truth and good. Consecrating art and song, Holy book and pilgrim track, Hurling floods of tyrant wrong From the sacred limits back,-- Life of Ages, richly poured, Love of God, unspent and free, Flow still in the Prophet's word And the People's liberty! --SAMUEL JOHNSON. Tune--Hummel. 3 One holy church of God appears Through every age and race, Unwasted by the lapse of years, Unchanged by changing place. From oldest time, on farthest shores, Beneath the pine and palm, One Unseen Presence she adores, With silence or with psalm. Her priests are all God's faithful sons, To serve the world raised up; The pure in heart her baptized ones, Love, her communion-cup. The Truth is her prophetic gift, The Soul her sacred page; And feet on mercy's errand swift Do make her pilgrimage. --SAMUEL LONGFELLOW. Tune--Coronation. 4 Our God, our God, thou shinest here; Thine own this latter day; To us thy radiant steps appear,-- Here goes thy glorious way. We shine not only with the light Thou sheddest down of yore; On us thou streamest strong and bright; Thy comings are not o'er. We gaze on thy outgoings bright; Down cometh thy full power; We the glad bearers of thy light, This, this thy saving hour. On us thy spirit hast thou poured To us thy word has come; We feel, we thank thy quickening Lord! Thou shalt not find us dumb. --T. H. GILL.
