Chapter 4 Page 21B The Dairyman...NOW Then, in the 1920s, mechanization slowly began to appear on the dairy farm, diminishing the need for manual labor. Today's dairyman may have just as long a day as his 1900 counterpart, but management is now more important to success than physical toil. His day still begins with milking, but advanced systems and automated equipment require much less effort than was required in years past. However, the modern dairyman must continue to update his knowledge of feed rations, breeding management, proper milking techniques, sanitation and herd health. While yesterday's dairyman received his information from a local Grange and a few agricultural publications, today's dairy manager often attends seminars and takes college-level courses covering such subjects as herd managmeent, feeding and nutrition, breeding techniques, and the use of on-farm computers for mangement information and analysis.
