WITH THE AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE Save Jan 25 , 191 9 Dear Rosie I will write you a letter while I am on leave and seeing some of the nice parts of France . ¶ I am at aix-Les-Bains , near the border of Switzerland and Italy . ¶ I am among the alps . I was on Mont . Revard today and I sure had a good time . The top of it is far above the clouds and it sure is one of the prettiest sights there is to look down on the clouds , and when the sun is setting it it the prettiest scene there is to look upon . ¶ The mountain is 5070 feet high and you can see mont Blanc which 42 miles away , and it don’t look one a half [Page 2] AMERICAN ON ACTIVE SERVICE Y.M.C.A . WITH THE AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE 2 Jan 25 , 191 8 mile away . ¶ Mont . Blanc is 16000 ft . high , or about 2 ½ miles high . ¶ I sure am enjoying myself here. I have only two more days here and then I start back to my company . I could stand a month here easy . This town here was built before Christ . It is over two thousand years old . There is a museum here that has a mummy in it that is over 5000 years old , and there are two stone coffins that have skeletons in them that have turned to dust , but still show the form of a skelton . ¶ I went to Mont schambotie [?] yesterday and ate dinner in an old scottish lady’s castle and walked back along the lake . ¶ There sure is [Page 3] AMERICAN ON ACTIVE SERVICE Y.M.C.A . WITH THE AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE 3 191 . lots to see here. I went to chambery two days while here and there sure is lots to see there also: Boo coo French beauties , I am to see the gorges tomorrow and I have seen every thing almost there is to see here. ¶ I tried to skie today and sprained my ankle and wrist , and that was enough , so I took them off and got me a sled and took a few rides on it . ¶ I don’t know when we will start for home , but it will be soon . ¶ I am tried of this country . I guess I will have to close for this time hoping to find a nice long loving letter from you when I get back to the company . Good bye .
