American Expeditionary Forces Somewhere in France April 18 , 1918 Mr . L.E . Smallwood Dear Uncle – Now that I have time I will try and answer your letter I recieved about 6 weeks ago . I expect you are wandering what is the matter I haven’t wrote well you see I have so many to write to and we have been moving around quite a bit have been working so just never wrote . I got your letter in the U.S . so got my money all O.K . but move to soon as I only had 15 min to go and get the check cashed the money came in handy for I haven’t been payed since Jan . You said you were out to G . Willamore’s [?] to a turkey dinner they didn’t wish I was there any more than I did for HELP YOUR COUNTRY BY SAVING . Well I believe I had better change the subject for I will be getting hungry . Ha , Ha Uncle Ed [?] . Well you sold my buggey you got as much as I expected of coars it was worth more to me if I had stayed at home but as it is I am satisfied so you just keep what is left for the government will pay me one of these days and I can get along without money here for there isn’t any place to buy any thing . You wanted me to have some pictures taken well I don’t know where I would have them taken and if I did I couldn’t send any home . Say Uncle Lew [?] you can send me a paper once and a while and whatever you do send are some Cigarettes HELP YOUR COUNTRY BY SAVING . I only weigh about 175 lbs . for I cant smoke this tobacco over here I brought enough tobacco over to last about 3 mo . that was all I had room for so b the time I get an answer from you I will be just about out . I had a fine trip comming over never got a bit sea sick . They told me to join the army and see the world and I guess I am seeing it as I have traveled about 10,000 mi have been a cross England and over quite a bit of France I would like to go on around the world before I come home . Tell Dad I mean this letter for him also and for him to write I will write to him next time he owes me a letter any way this is the last sheet of paper I have so had better quit I can’t write and tell you very much will tell you when I get back .
