Army and Navy Young Men’s Christian Association “With the Colors” [American flag in upper left-hand corner and YMCA logo in upper right hand corner] Hempstead , NY 11-14-18 Dear Folks : I will write a few lines this evening . When a fellow starts to move around he don’t know where he will be the next day . They say we are going to be transferred over to field one . I will send a copy of that song in this letter . Let Mr . Peltz have it to put in the paper . It will be at least 2 or 3 months before I get out of the army . All of the fellows that were in the last draft are going home from the camp . Some of them arrived here Monday and they started for home this morning . I don’t like it at all because I did not get to go [At bottom of page] To the writer : Save by writing on BOTH sides of this paper . To the folks at home : save food , buy liberty binds and war savings stamps . [Page 2] over sea’s . All that I can talk about will be what has happened in the camp where I have been. Well I did get where I could send letters with out postage . That is a little better than some of them any way . But they can’t say that was my fault because I did not get to go ! We have the reputation of being the best photo section that ever left this field . And the embarkation officer said that the three Photo sections on the boat were the best looking bunch of soldiers that ever started over on that transport – I mean soldiers not personal looks . The captain of the boat said to our Lts that we were the only fellows who tried to shave and keep clean white on the boat . So that is a little honor any way . Well I must close for this time . I will save a little for next time . Yours Ed [Envelope] [YMCA Logo] “With the colors” Mr . A. Pollock Clinton Ill LB 24
