"' RABBI BENJAMIN BAIM Expert Mohel recommended by leading doctors Attends City or Suburbs 2107 SOUTH AVERS AVENUE CRAwford 1311 LAWadale 6809 MAN OF THE TIMES Dr. Salomo Rosowsky-Brilliant Musicologist and Historian By DAVID SPIGLER Editor's Note- Professor Salomo Rosowsky, the subject of the following article is at present in Chicago to give a series of lectures on Biblical cantillation and harmonics as the apply to modern Jewish music. When Dr. Salomo Rosowsky, the dis-tinguished Jewish musicologist, delivers his series of five lectures on "Music of the Pentateuch and Liturgy" at Chi-cago's College of Jewish Studies this month, American students of Jewish music will hear one of the most brilliant exponents of its history and import that the modern world knows. An accomplished linguist and anthro-pologist as well as a specialist in music-ology, Dr. Rosowsky delivers two lec-tures on the Prayer Chants in Yiddish and three lectures in English on the Cantillations of the Bible. While his talks are of special interest to students of Synagogue and Church Music, they are fascinating musical delineations to any one of taste and cultural curiosity. Salomo Rosowsky is the youngest son of Baruch Leib Rosowsky, the fam-ous cantor of Riga. He studied law at the University of Kiev and music at the Imperial Conservatory at Peters-burg with Ljadov, Rimsky-Korsakow and Glazounow. In 1905, Rosowsky studied under Arthur Nikisch at the Leipzig Conservatory. He was co-founder of the Society for Jewish Folk Music in Petersburg in 1908, which played an important role in the development of modern Jewish art music. In 1911, Rosowsky became music critic of the daily newspaper, "Denj" (The Day) and later collaborat-ed in the periodical "Musikalni Sov-remennik" (The Musical Contempor-ary). In 1918 he became Music Direc-tor of the Jewish Art Theatre at Peters-burg, for which he composed music to Sholom Asch's play, "The Sinner", to the same author's Biblical poem, "Am-non and Tamar," and for Gutzkow's drama, "Uriel Acosta." Founded Conservatory Following his return to Riga, Ro-sowsky founded the first Jewish con-servatory of music on a large scale, acting as teacher of musical theory for five years. He combined his work with that of music critic for the paper, "Sewodnja." In 1925 Rosowsky emigrated to Pal-estine, where he was active in thre different fields-composition, musical research and teaching. He composed music for the Habimah Theatre's per-formances of the Sholom Aleichem comedy, "The Treasure," Calderon's play, "The Crown of David," Levick's "The Golem;" for the Ohel Theatre's performances of Krasheninikov's Bibli-cal idyll, "Jacob and Rachel," and "Sabbatai Zwi" by Bistritsky; and fi-nally for the performance by the Theatrical Society of Jerusalem of Stein-man's drama, "Messiah the Son of Joseph" (Mashiah ben Yosef). During the same period, Rosowsky wrote works of orchestra ("Trauer Ode") and others, chamber music en-semble, choir, as well as a number of songs for male and female voices. He also edited a collection of Pelestinian songs "Mezimrat Ha-Aretz." His earlier works, composed in Russia, comprise a symphonic poem, "Chassidim," two quintettes for wood instruments, various piano pices ("Poem," "Badchan," etc.), choral works, etc. In the field of musical research, Ro-sowsky has been occupied preeminently with the Biblical tropes for which he originated the "Analytical Theory of Biblical Cantillation." He lectured on the results of his research at Columbia University, the Jewish Institute of Re-ligion, Dropsie College, the Yiddish Scientific, Universities of London and Cambridge, Musicology Association and Jews' College, both in London, the Institute Rabbinique in Paris, and many other scholarly institutions of Europe. Rosowsky's padagogic activities have taken place primarily at the Jerusalem Conservatory of Music. Many contem-porary young Palestinian composers are his pupils. The Palestinian Educational Department in 1945 officially resolved to include his Tropal System in the seminaries. In 1946, Rosowsky was awarded a special prize for his musical activities by the Municipality of Tel Aviv. His present visit to the United States is connected with the forthcoming pub-lication of his monumental work, "The Music of the Pentateuch," by the Co-lumbia University Press and the Amer-ican Academy for Jewish Research. He is now teaching in New York at various Jewish institutions as well as at the New School of Social Research, where he is lecturing on the -music of the Bible and presenting two courses, one in strict Counterpoint (Palestinian style) and another in Modern Harmony.
