HURON, CHICAGO DEL. 4252 Season's Greetings FROM A FRIEND The Story of Haganah By HIRSCH WOLFSON Since the United Nations Assembly made its decision to establish independ-ent Jewish and Arab states in Palestine, the Haganah-the Jewish defense army, has come more and more into the fore-front of the struggle for the actual es-tablishment of the Jewish state. And with the American reversal of policy on the Palestine problem and the grave danger of the UN Assembly reversing its decision the question of the very existence of the Jewish state after the termination of the British Mandate de-pends on the ability of the Haganah to hold and defend it. The membership of Haganah today includes just about every able-bodied adult Jew in the country, from the chalutz to the shopkeeper to the fac-tory worker and the plant manager. A recent visitor to Palestine reports how when making a purchase in a Jewish store on one occasion, the storekeeper asked him to please be quick about making his selection. "Why the rush," asked the visitor, "is it closing time?" "No," replied the storekeeper, "but I have to report for guard duty in a few minutes." The same party reported that the young man who was his guide dur-ing his stay, bid him farewell the day before he left the country. "I must say goodbye now," the guide said, "I won't be able to see you again tomorrow." Upon being asked where he was go-ing he replied: "I have to report for active duty with the Haganah." Estimates place the strength of the Haganah at about 70,000 including its full-time, part-time and reserve units. On the basis of a recent registration of all young Jews in Palestine between the ages of 17 and 25, 85,000 are avail-able for all types of service. And with the unofficial self-imposed conscription the Yishuv may well succeed in build-ing up its active defense force to 100,000 or even 150,000. Without a doubt the Haganah today represents the highest degree of unity in action that has been achieved by the Palestine Yishuv and takes in all sec-tions and groupings in the Jewish com-munity except the right-wing dissident Irgun and Stern group elements. 0 There is a 30-year history behind the Jewish defense army Haganah, which incidently, has been an illegal organiz-ation almost since its inception. The first defense groups to guard the Jewish settlements were organized when Pal-estine was still under Turkish rule in the early 1900's. In 1907 these groups banded together in the organization of Jewish Watchmen, some of its mem-bers serving in the British Army's Jew-ish Legion during the first world war. After the war the Watchmen, which tended to develop into a professional army, were disbanded to make way for the Haganah which was immediately organized on the basis of involving all the able-bodied people in the Yishuv.
