The shining glasses I'(f are filled to the brim with rich, sweet wine. A matzoh lies hidden in ritual 0 * fashion at the edge of the pillow, and the big Hagaddah, shabby with the thumbprints of years, is open. "Blessed are Thou, Lord, our God, King of the JAS Universe, who dost create the fruit of the wine. This is the bread of affliction which our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Let all those who are hunrgy enter and eat thereof. . In this year of our history 5708, throughout the length and breadth of America, thousands of Jews are cele-brating a more recent deliverance. They are the homeless, the displaced, the survivors of Nazi persecution who have come from the lonely ruins and hiding places of the world to find haven on our shores. V C More than 40,000 uprooted Jews have nd, . come to America since the end of the 00 war. About half of the present arrivals A^\a are from the displaced persons camps of Europe. Several hundred monthly come from the ghetto of Shanghai, where they fled from Nazi horde only to be interned subsequently by the Japanese. Others come from various countries in Europe where they hid out or were stranded during the years of war and persecution. In many instances, the new arrival INGS is the last remaining member of his family. He is the survivor of an ex- JELL perience of horror that took from him SERVICE earthly possessions, his loved ones, and even his human dignity. He comes to EBster 2239 America with only the hope in his heart, his living need to let the dead bury the dead, his almost inconceivable :s courage to start life anew. Hungry, he enters. . CORP. American Jewish c o m m un ities resident throughout the United States have or-ganized themselves to help him. MON. 0869 Through United Service for New Ameri- ------- cans, the largest welfare agency serving immigrants in this country, the Jews of America are enabling the newcomer to build his life anew. Wherever he ARE goes in our vast country, organizations IDRY and public-spirited people that cooper-ate with United Service, work to help Road him rebuild his life in peace and free-dom, to become an independent, self-sustaining member of a democratic so-ciety. The program which United Serv-k Co. ice conducts in behalf of the refugee 'ARPETS immigrants is financed by the $250,000, 000 campaign of the United Jewish Ap- Ices g SSeerrvviiccee peal for 1948. rrison 1525 United Service help involves rehabili-tative assistance and emotional support during a difficult period of adjustment. It means resettlement in the various gs communities of America where the skills of the newcomers are needed and where Co. the process of Americanization can be more rapid.
