WRIGHT & CO1V CO A L POLISH JEWS (Continued from Page 35) The Society for Fostering Jewish Art This society was formed a year ago by a group of surviving Jewish artists and sculptors. Among its 22 members is the sculptor Natan Rapaport who is now working on a monument dedicated to the heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto up-rising. This monument will be uncov-ered in Warsaw in April of this year, the fifth anniversary of the uprising. Among other outstanding members are the sculptor Chaim Hanft and the painter Prof. Wlodarski. INGS The aim of this society is to collect Jewish art, take care of historical treas- CO. ures, bring moral comfort and financial aid to the remaining artists, and en- LON. 2580 courage their creative work. A permanent exhibit of Jewish art - is shown in the headquarters of the Association. The pride,of the collection is "The Head of a Jew," a painting AAL CO. by Maurycy Gotlib. Gotlib who was a student of the great Polish painter, Dover 2488 Jan Matejko, died at the age of 23, but he left so many eminent works of art, that he is considered the greatest Jewish painter of the 19th century. INGS Paintings by Samuel Hirshenberg are also exhibited. Hirshenberg, a former o weaver in Lodz, became professor of ompany Art at Betzalel in Jerusalem. Paintings :TORS by Arthur Markowicz, frrom Krakow, Mon. 3202 and others, are also shown. Special attention is being given to the collection of works by Jewish art- INGS ists who were killed during the Ger-man occupation. There is an exhibit cts Co. of sketches by Bruno Schulz, a talented author and painter who was killed in Drohobycz; landscapes by Maurycy Trembacz, and paintings by Maksy-milian Eliowicz, both of whom died in [NGS Treblinka; paintings by Dr. Szynagel who died in a concentration camp at uompany Janow, near Lwow. Among the paintings of the surviv- SEE. 0949 ing artists are: "Motives from the Ghetto," by Jonas Stern from Krakow, and compositions by Anatol Wroblewski. [NGS The association receives subsidies from the Central Jewish Committee in WARE Poland, and from the Ministry of Cul-ture and Art. Non-Jewish artistic cir- -l ome les in Poland, as well as Jewish artists VIN. 1990 abroad, are very much interested in the work of their Jewish colleagues in Po-land. The Association has received gifts from abroad, including paints. Journalists' Convention rame & The Jewish Writers and Journalists Association in Poland participated in the eleventh (but 2nd since the war) IN ST. convention of the Polish Journalists' 52 Union in Szczecin, on November 16 -- through 18, 1947. Mr. M. Mirski, a .journalist from Lodz who represented 3 the Jewish group, addressed the Con-rPAVY vention.
