March 12, 1942 THE SENTINEL Rabbi David de Sola Pool and Frank Weil of the Jewish Welfare Board spoke at a meeting of the Jude-ans in New York on March 1, describ-ing respectively the work done by the Je wish Chaplains and the U. S. O. Both addresses were admirable. The gathering present was profoundly stirred by the description of events, personal-ities and programs of helpfulness in the cantonments and the communities. Rabbi Pool's address was filled with stories of hu-man interest, and it is clear that the boys in uniform are taking seriously the opportunities for religious self-expression which are being afforded them. He told, also, of the cooperation of friendly non-Jews with boys of piety. For example, one lad who lays Tefillin, despite the objections of less observant Jews, was protected against them by an Irish soldier-friend; when the Sabbath came, on which no Tefillin need be laid, the Irish boy exclaimed: "Now you go ahead and put on them things; don't let those other fellows ARTIFICIAL FLOWER MATERIALS LowPrices, Big Stock HEADQUARTERS FOR ALL SUPPLIES Wood Fibre - Boucle - Che-nille - Ferns - Tubing - Fruits Berries - Leaves - Feathers Crepe Paper - Cellophane Boxes - Pottery - Flower Materials of All Kinds - Tools - Dies Mallets - Cutters - Flower Factories' Supplies. CHICAGO'S BIG ASSORTED STOCK BIG GROUND FLOOR STORE LOW PRICES-NEAR LOOP WEB ster 3840 315 W. Van Buren J.ZANONE Entire Building Used for Manufacture of Rapid Rollers bully you." Another boy, named Kelley, when he heard that Rabbi Pool was from New York rushed up to him, crying out: "Let me shake the hand of someone from New York; I've been down south here for weeks and haven't laid eyes on a single person from home !" Rabbi Pool says that there is competition among the pious young Jewish soldier boys to conduct religious services. I am happy to say that one of the former confirmants of Congregation Rodeph Sholom, Stanley Kaufman, an air cadet in the Middle West, has officiated at such services in the absence of a Jewish chaplain. It has come to my attention that M. Her-bert Wiesenberg has done the same at another camp. Rabbi Pool told of the occasion when a Catholic con-ducted mass with wine furnished by a Protestant and the wafer in the form of a Jewish Matzoh, Kosher salami has become a popular food with Jew-ish boys away from home and eager for home cooking. Frank Weil, speak-ing of the work done by the United Service Organizations, says that one boy remarked: "Formerly on leave I used to get drunk; now I come to your affairs at the Temple." Mr. Weil in his address also made an interesting comment upon "good' Jewish news," such as cooperation between the vari-ous denominational service groups, including the Jewish Welfare Board; and "bad Jewish news," dealing with boycott, persecution, pogrom and the like. Surely this raises the question whether we Jews in America can sur-vive if nourished only on "good Jewish news." My conviction is that we do not depend upon dolorous tidings to perpetuate our solidarity or our faith; we can flourish only in a healthy and friendly atmosphere. From a small Eastern community comes the story of a distressing occurrence recently. The well-to-do wife of a German Gentile brewer, whose son had been drafted by the army, went after midnight to one of the apartments owned by her husband and herself, and drove out into the night a young Jewish husband and wife with their six-week-old baby. She shouted: "You Jews are responsible for the war. What America needs is another Hitler." Is this not disturbing in the extreme? I understand that the local American Legion and the church-men have endeavored to create an antidote ftr this unfortunate occur-rence, but the harm has been done. I have been informed that before Pearl Harbor Jewish soldier boys were blamed by non-Jews in camp for having "gotten us into this." The Jap-anese attack has curtailed but not ended this propaganda, and Hitler may be more adroit than we think in emphasizing the alleged responsibility of the Jews for the war in all his re-cent utterances. Let it be remembered by Americans that if this War is lost, America will be so profoundly changed that those institutions which we all prize and require will be demolished beyond recovery. The Anti-Jewish preachment is a weapon useful to Hit-ler in this country. Gentile friends, fellow-Americans, for your own sake, beware of susceptibility to this dread-ful agitation! TELLING IT IN GATH By RABBI LOUIS L NEWMAN In the Bulletin of Temple Beth El, Detroit, of which Rabbi B. Benedict Glazer is the minister, the following item appears in the issue of Thursday, March 5: CHOOSE! THIS? One hour of: 1. Mah-jongg (excitement, relaxa-tion, gossip), or 2. Bridge (same-with more ten-sion), or 3. Dinner party (some talk, more food, a pinch of soda), or 4. Business (worry, fatigue and a headache), or 5. Movie (Dumb o, Garbo and Harpo), or 6. J itters about anti-Semitism ("What shall we do? Rabbi, did you hear . .. ?") Any of the above can be had any evening (seven!) in the week. Brother, can you spare an hour? OR THIS? One hour of: 1. Fellowship (with God, man and community), and 2. Meditation (the inner fortress of the soul), and 3. Thought (about the critical problems that face us), and 4. Prayer (to release the heart from fear), and 5. Faith (giving strength for the entire week), and 6. Proof against anti-Semitism (Jews are loyal, reverent and religious!) Here is the best "goodwill" in the world - and you can create it! All the above can be had on Friday evening. Sister, can you take an hour? In the Outpost, published by Americans in Britain, the follow-ing excerpt from the Thanksgiving Day speech by John Gauntlett, presi-dent of the American Society in Lon-don, appeared: "You will recall, when the enemy blitzed Belfast last year and the city was in flames, fire brigades from Dublin hastened to the assistance of their fellow Irishmen. It was from the debris of a half-demolished house in Belfast that an old Irishwoman was being extricated. When she looked up and saw the strange uniform of her rescuer, she inquired anxiously: 'And who might you be?' 'It's all right, Mother-don't worry. I'm a Dublin fireman,' replied the visitor. 'Glory be to God,' retorted the old woman, 'I didn't know I'd been blown so far.' " Stefan Zweig "If Hitler's butcher boys are the legal rulers of Austria, then Stefan Zweig, who, with his wife, committed suicide in Brazil recently, was a man without a country.
