However, during the remain-der of the 1948 season, it is not ex-pected that these programs shall exceed two in number. * STRUCTURE AND FINANCING The B'nai B'rith Cultural Founda tion shall be, in reality, a Sub-Coin mittee of the Chicago B'nai B'rith Council, which shall be responsible for its supervision and control. Although it is expected that the Com-mittee will be able to make these cul-tural programs self-sustaining, in order to provide a revolving fund and to in-sure financial stability, the Council's authority is sought to authorize an ap-proach to the Lodges for a subvention to make the creation of the Cultural Foundation possible. We respectfully submit as the unani-mous opinion of the Planning Com-mittee as created by Morris Alexander, President of the Chicago B'nai B'rith Council. It is our considered opinion that the Chicago B'nai B'rith Cultural Foundation will prove to be another major contribution of B'nai B'rith to the American Jewish scene. In con-clusion we ask the adoption of this en-tire report as submitted, to the end that the Chicago B'nai B'rith Council es-tablish the Chicago B'nai B'rith Cul-tural Foundation, authorizing all neces-sary steps in implementation. All the foregoing recommendations were approved by the Executive Com-mittee of the Chicago B'nai B'rith Council before ratification by the Coun-cil, and will be carried out in 1948 to the credit of B'nai B'rith and the en-tire community, said President Alex-ander. Chicago B'nai B'rith Cultural Foun-dation was proposed by Carl Bromberg, Program Committee chairman of the Chicago B'nai B'rith Council and car-ried by a 2 to 1 vote at the Dec. 16 meeting of the Congress Hotel with the active support of Council President Morris Alexander and major committee chairman. The Chicago B'nai B'rith Cultural Foundation shall have as its general purpose the traditional B'nai B'rith ob-jectives of fostering an appreciation of Jewish culture and advancing Jewish art. Specifically, the Foundation aims at bringing to Chicago the finest crea-tions in Jewish music, drama, fine arts and the dance, to the end that the rich contributions of Jewry to modern cul-ture be brought properly to the atten-tion of the B'nai B'rith and Jewish com-munity in particular, and all of Chi-cago's citizenry in general. An additional purpose of the Cul-tural Foundation shall be to advance the American cultural traditions. It is planned that, at least once each year, under the aegis of B'nai B'rith, the most distinguished American artist, singer, instrumentalist, composer or man of Yetters be presented to the entire com- WALTER SAMELOW, B'nai B'rith Membership Chairman shown with world-famed iceskater Sonja Henie, who will headline the Ice Show opening at the Chicago Stadium, December 25. For every two new members secured by any B'nai B'rith since November 1, there will be one com-plimentary ticket to the glittering premier of the revue. munity of Chicago. It is the joint sense of this committee that such a Cultural Foundation will not only further the traditional cultural aims of B'nai B'rith, but will greatly enhance B'nai B'rith's prestige in gen-eral and provide an additional stimulus for membership in our area among cer-tain heretofore unreached segments of the Jewish community. Types of Programs Jewish Programs: The foundation shall aim to secure for its programs the most distinguished Jewish exponents and interpreters of the truest Jewish art in the realm of music, drama and the dance. It is hoped -that, depending upon the availability of superlative talent in these three fields, that one festival each shall be devoted to Jew-ish music, drama and the dance respec-tively. It is anticipated that from time to time, a Jewish Arts Festival will be arranged which may combine any two or three of the fields of music, drama and the dance. General Programs: Two examples of programs advancing the American tradition have been suggested: 1. A Town Hall Meeting on the President's "Civil Rights Committee Report," with such outstanding speak-ers as Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr., Charles E. Wilson, president of General Electric Company, Max Lerner and others. 2. A Chicago tribute to Carl Sand-bers, Chicago's great contribution to American poetry and letters-a com-bined symposium of distinguished men of letters with the participation of the poet himself and a rendition of his American folksongs. Supported by Leaders Fred Mann, past president of the Council was a leader in the debate sup-porting the Chicago B'nai B'rith Cul-tural Foundation recommended by a special committee, including Carl Brom-berg, Program Chairman, Joseph Al-baum, Hillel Foundation Chairman, and Chairman of the special committee, Walter Samelow and Nathan M. Cohen, Chairman and co-Chairman of Mem-bership, Aron Levita and Senator Abra-ham L. Marovitz, Co-Chairman of Civic Affairs, and Fred A. Mann, Chair-man of Women's Chapter.
