THE SENTINEL February 12, 1942 EUROPEAN JEWRY WAITS FOR SPRING Scandanavians Mark Brandes Centennary London, Feb. 9 (JTA) - The Cen-tennary of George Brandes, Danish- Jewish critic and author, who was born in February, 1842, was marked here this week in B. B. C. broadcasts in Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Danish. Extracts from Brandes' work in which he condemned German ag-gression against Denmark in 1864 and violently attacked Prussian militarism were read. Hinting at the recent attempts to introduce anti-Jewish laws in Den-mark, the Free Danish broadcast stressed the fact that "in a free Den-mark Brandes' Jewish origin did not prevent him from reaching the high moral position of a professor and writer whom the whole Danish people read with admiration." Civilian Defense Creates Better Racial Feeling New York, Feb. 11 (JTA)-The present emergency is affording New Yorkers of all faiths and nationalities a 'splendid" opportunity to create a new and better spirit of understanding, cooperation and friendliness, Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia declared this week in a message endorsing Brother-hood Week, which will be observed throughout the country during the week of Washington's Birthday, Feb-ruary 15-22, under the auspices of the National Conference of Christians and. Jews. Noting an "increasing" demonstra-tion of neighborliness on the part of all New Yorkers, the Mayor attributed the increase in part to the auxiliary or-ganizations set up under the civilian defense program. "Men and women of all classes and all races and religious groups are forming new contacts with one another through their voluntary work as air raid wardens, fire wardens, or in any of the numerous other posi-tions under this program," he said. "This period of national unity under a national emergency is a splendid time for us to increase the mutual understanding and sympathy of the manifold groups within our society. Ready to Die Figbting, New York, Feb. 11 (JPS) - A few weeks ago 20-year-old Elliott Blut-man, a Bronx lad in the U. S. Air Corps, wrote to his parents: "I am ready to sacrifice myself, if necessary, so that my loved ones may live in a world free of Hitler." The other day his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Blut-man, received a letter from the army notifying them that Elliott had died in California, where he had been sta-tioned. Details were not forthcoming, due to regulations. The dead boy's parents recalled that Elliott had been assigned to duty in Hawaii. On December 5, however, two days before the Pearl Harbor attack, his application to transfer to the Air Corps was accepted. He remained in California. Fate of 5,000,000 Jews Hinges on Nazis Spring Offensive, Diplomats Believe Stockholm, Feb. 10 (WNS) - The fate of the nearly 5,000,000 European Jews estimated to be under the con-trol of the Nazi dictatorship will hinge on the expected Nazi offensive this spring, according to well-informed diplomats here. With Hitler expected to launch an-other desperate offensive against Soviet Russia, North Africa and the Middle East, Nazi-controlled Europe's Jewish population must pin its hopes on the might of Britain and America's combined sea power, Russia's armies and America's industrial production. While the spring of 1942 will be a critical period for the entire demo-cratic world, these diplomats pointed out, it will be most crucial for Eur-ope's persecution-weary Jews as a re-sult of plans recently hatched in Ber-lin under the supervision of Dr. Alfred Rosenberg, Nazi Minister of all occu-pied territories. WNS dispatches several months ago disclosed that Dr. Rosenberg, self-appointed dean of Nazi theoreticians and philosophers, was working on plans to concentrate all of Europe's Jews in a so-called "Jewish State" somewhere in Eastern Europe. Latest advices reaching here from the Nazi capital indicate that these plans have now been complete and approved by Reichsfuehrer Hitler. Execution of these plans, which will in effect establish the largest prison in the history of the world, depends on the success of the coming Nazi offensive. A successful drive through Russia, with the subsequent destruc-tion of the Red Army, it was believed, will be followed by the immediate in-troduction of Dr. Rosenberg's plan to create a "Jewish State," enclosed by barbed wire and machine gun nests and shut off completely from com-munication with the outside world. While secrecy veils the site of the proposed "Jewish State," all indica-tions point to its establishment either in the Eastern part of Poland or Rus-sia. The "Jewish State," according to Berlin reports, "will realize the ulti-mate aim of the Nazi anti-Jewish pol-icy, namely, of ridding Europe of the last Jew." Preparatory to fulfillment of the proposed Nazi scheme, Nazi authori-ties have resumed mass deportations of Jews from Belgium, Slovakia, Ger-many, Austria, Yugoslavia and Hol-land, to eastern Poland. These Jews are housed in temporary, unheated barracks to await the day when they will be forcibly thrown into their "Jewish State." Nazi officials of the Department of Jewish Questions have drawn up a series of regulations and decrees which will be introduced into the "Jewish State" in order to prevent "the spread of Jewish influence in, other parts of the world.". A Nazi spokesman recently summed up Hitler's attitude with regard to Europe's Jewish population: "Jews must be cut off from the rest of the population and return to their ghet-tos. Jewish quarters must be roped off and guarded by sentries. Jews must work only inside their ghettos." Dr. Rosenberg had previously been reported planning to announce the "Jewish State" from the Kremlin in Moscow, which he had described as the center of "Jewish Bolshevism." Few among the diplomatic corps here doubt that the Nazi Minister will carry out his plan-providing he ever gets to see the Kremlin. N. Y. Tel Aviv, Feb. 9 (JTA)-Diamonds valued at $1,000,000 were exported from Palestine to the United States in 1941 and these exports will be doubled in 1942, it was reported this week at a conference of Palestine diamond deal-ers, the first of its kind ever held in Palestine. Seventy persons who were active in the diamond industry in Belgium, Hol-land, Poland and Germany before Hitler came to power are participating in it. Approximately $2,500,000 is now being dispensed by the Palestine dia-mond industry in wages to workers, it was disclosed at the conference. 30 3 Palestine Ships Lost in Fierce Gale Tel Aviv, Feb. 9 (JTA)-A fierce Mediterranean gale last week destroyed three Palestine vessels and took the lives of five Palestine seamen. The three ships that were lost in a storm off Latakia, Syria, were the 200-ton S.S. Stikva, the 407-ton S.S. Amathus, belonging to the Atid Navigation Co., and the motorship, Hafez Elrahman, owned by the Palestine Transport and Shipping Co. The five seamen, all of whom were lost when the Stihva went down, are Jacob Salem, Urko Chibowsky, Jacob Silberstein, Pavel Kreigel and Eisig Rittner. The first three were buried at Beirut, while the bodies of the other two have not been recovered. Kreigel, who was the first officer of the Stikva, had previously been rescued from the S.S. Antar, which was torpedoed by an Italian submarine some time ago. Nat'I Refugee Service To Continue Retraining New York, Feb. 9 (JTA)-The re-training program of the National Ref-ugee Service will be increased consid-erably in 1942 in expectation that our country will face a shortage of trained men and will need all available indus-trial manpower. to meet the demands of the national all-out production ef-fort, it was announced this week by Albert Abrahamson, Executive Director of the N.R.S. Under the retraining program of the National Refugee Service, refugees who have no prospects of earning their livelihood in fields they formerly pur-sued are retrained for jobs where opportunities are available. Last year, 1,000 individuals were entered in more than 75 retraining courses both in New York City and a number of communi-ties throughout the country. Courses in other cities were set up with the N.R.S. guidance and often with the agency's financial assistance. The N.R.S. this week advised refu-gees throughout the country to pay special attention to question 15 in filling-out their certificates of identifi-cation as requested by the Denartment of Justice. In this question aliens are asked for explanations of the circum-stances under which they left their native country. The answer to this question may serve as the basis for reclassification. A special staff has been assigned by the N.R.S. to assist refugees with their applications. YislIV Diamond Exports TO US,. to be DOuled
