February 12, 1942 THE SENTINEL London (JTA)-Special laboratories to supply anti-typhus vaccine for the Middle East will be set up in Palestine as a precautionary measure to check the possible spread of typhus from Nazi-held territories, British health authorities reported here this week. Washington (JPS)-Taking the in-itiative in demanding that friendly aliens be allowed to fight in the armed forces of the United States, the Legis-lature of Maine passed a resolution urging Congress to accept aliens for the Army and Navy. Senator Wallace White of Maine read the resolution into the Congressional Record. New York (JPS) - "To mobilize Americans of foreign birth for victory in our war and the elimination of every handicap interfering with the achievement of this goal," a national conference will be held by the Amer-ican Committee for Protection of Foreign Born, in Cleveland on May 9 and 10, it was announced here. Geneva (JPS)-Nazi administrators in conquered Poland are pushing a vigorous anti-sabotage campaign which features the publication of a "wanted" list of twenty thousand Poles and Jews accused of being saboteurs. Special Gestapo units are scouring the country for these elements "subver-sive" to Nazi rule. Among the accused are 2,000 Jewish names. New York (JPS)-Dr. Bernard Glueck, leading psychiatrist and trans-lator of noted books dealing with psychoanalysis, has been appointed Director of the Family Guidance and Consultation Service of the Child Study Association here. Dr. Glueck, an author himself, has translated the works of Alfred Adler, Franz Alex-ander and Paul Schilder into English. London (JPS) - Delegates repre-senting 10,000 German and Austrian refugees, most of whom are Jews, con-ferred here to discuss ways and means of inducing the British government to make better use of the services of ref-ugees during wartime. Geneva (JPS)-That Danish senti-ment still braves the forced anti- Semitic campaigns of the Nazi over-lords was indicated as a Copenhagen court sentenced the anti-Semitic Vigor Staerke, who tried to burn the great Synagogue of Copenhagen, to three years' imprisonment. London (JPS)-The ex-Mufti of Jeruaslem, Haj Amin el Husseini, par-tisan to the Nazis in the present war and recently in Berlin and Rome as the Arab adviser to the Axis leaders, has broadcast another radio appeal to Palestine Arabs to await the arrival of General Rommel as one who would "free them from the yoke of the Jews and the British." Geneva (JPS)-The ruthless Ger-man penal code, which provides Nazi authorities with the right to punish Jews and Poles for "crimes" commit-ted against Germans since 1932, has replaced the Polish code in Nazi-held Poland. Jerusalem (JPS-Palcor) - Ernst Frischer, former President of the Jewish Political Party in Czechoslo-vakia and since last November a mem-ber of the State Council of the Czechoslovakian government-in-exile, left this country for London to take up his new duties. Frischer has been living in Palestine since March, 1940, having before that spent some time in a Gestapo concentration camp. New York (JTA)-A check for $4,100, representing 25 per cent of the gross receipts of the special British Empire Edition published by the Jew-ish Daily Forward on December 7, was presented here to the British War Relief Society at a luncheon at the Commodore Hotel presided over by Frederick W. Gehle, chairman of the fund-raising division of the Society. Moscow (JTA)-The Soviet press reports from Biro-Bidjan that collec-tive farming in the Jewish autonomous region there is to be considerably ex-tended in connection with war emer-gency measures taken by the Soviet administration. The Jewish collective farms in Biro-Bidjan are clearing 3,000 acres of new fertile land from the taiga, the Siberian forest, and 10,000 acres of fallow land will be brought under cultivation, the report says. Tel Aviv (JPS-Palcor)-The orig-inal reward of £1,000 offered for the capture of Abraham Stern and £2,000 for information leading to the capture of the gang of terrorists associated with him was enlarged by the police, thus emphasizing the authorities' anxi-ety to apprehend the six members believed to be the ringleaders of the band responsible for the fatal explo-sion in Tel Aviv almost three weeks ago. At last report one member of the gang had been apprehended and two had surrendered. Zurich (JTA)-All Jewish sports organizations in Hungary have been drdered to disband immediately in a decree issued by the Ministry of National Education, the Rome radio reported this week. Jews were also ordered to leave any Hungarian sports groups to which they belong. NEWS BREVITIES A4SSURES Jerusalem (JTA)-A forest com-memorating the late Pinchas Ruten-berg was planted this week in the colony of Hanita in Upper Galilee in the presence of representatives of the leading institutions in the Yishub, in-cluding many Jewish National Fund officials. The money for the forest was collected about three years ago from workers of the Palestine Electric Cor-poration, on the occasion of Ruten-berg's sixtieth birthday. Zurich (JTA) - Jews throughout Germany have been deprived of their ration cards permitting them to buy shaving soap and have also been for-bidden to visit any barber shops, it is reported here this week. At the same Ii SECURIT time Nazi authorities, tightening their restrictions on the sale of bread and flour to Jews, ordered all bakeries and groceries to post signs stating that the sale of flour, white bread and pastry to Jews is forbidden. London (JPS-Palcor)-Harold Mac- Millan, who had previously shown a favorable interest in Palestinian prob-lems, has been appointed Parliamen-tary Undersecretary of State for the Colonies succeeding George Henry Hall, who was transferred from his Colonial Office post to that of Finan-cial Secretary.
