Two Jewish young men were taking

tion was taken by the protectors of thi
law . . . No, this did not happen is
Hitler's Germany . . . It happened is
New York a few weeks ago ... Bu

"NO EVIDENCE"
The District Attorney's office o
Brooklyn held a hearing on th
Brighton Beach anti-Semitic riot .
For days it questioned witnesses, Jew
ish and non-Jewish . . . The assistan
District Attorney in charge of the ex
amination was Mr. Rosenberg, son o
an orthodox rabbi ... When the hear
ing was all over, Rosenberg solemnly
announced (not publicly as yet) that
the examination did not uncover any
evidence of anti-Semitism or any or-ganized
direction . . . So what hap-pened
. . . At almost the very same
minute that Rosenberg made his amaz-ing
statement, four Gentile youngsters
broke into the Brighton Beach syna-gogue,
carried out a handful of prayer-books
and burned them in approved
Nazi style on a nearby field . . . But
still some Jewish leaders are terribly
busy keeping the incident from public
print.

From England this rather paradoxi-cal
item . . . Victor. Gollancz, Harold
Laski and Norman Bentwich, three
very distinguished Jewish leaders, are
sponsoring propaganda literature plead-ing
for leniency in dealing with the
German people . . . In other words
advocating a soft peace with Naziland
... The test as to whether German
war criminals will be dealt with justly
and not in accordance with Big Cartel
dictates will be the case of Hjalmar
Schacht . . . Schacht, as you know,
was the financial genius who made Hit-ler's
war program possible ... He has
powerful American and British friends
who are preparing a sad story about
Schacht "the liberal" who was "com-pelled"
to help Hitler... Anti-Semitic
outrages in Sudeten-Czechoslovakia and
in Poland are reaching a new high ...
The Nazi underground has been given
strict instructions not to indulge in
anti-Semitic violence in the Berlin area.
Reform Group Appoints
New Director
Rabbi Phineas Smoller, Director of
the Chicago Federation of Reform
Synagogues, announced the appoint-ment
of David D. Weinstein as part-time
director of the Chicago National
Federation of Temple Youth groups.
Mr. Weinstein, who will assume his
duties immediately in this newly
created post, has been active in Jewish
affairs. He is a member of the Chicago
War Records Committee of the Jewish
Welfare Board and of the Vocational
Guidance Committee, South Side
Lodge, B'nai B'rith. He is a graduate
I of Northwestern University where he
received his professional training in
psychology.
In 1941, while in the army, Mr.
Weinstein served as director of educa-tion
at Camp Forrest, Tennessee. Soon
after war was declared he was trans-r
ferred to an overseas installation. He
t was honorably discharged after three
years of service.
For the past year and a half Mr.
a Weinstein has been on the staff of the
n Anti-Defamation League of B'na
t B'rith, a position which he still retains
Mr. Weinstein spoke of the respon.
- sibility of the Synagogue towards the
youth of the community. He said
"I am convinced that our youth ha:
