GOLDMAN IT PAYS TO BE IGNORANT: With a softening of our social at-titude toward Germany and a softening of the brain as well, the decision has been made to shelve all the Nazi atro-city films. Perhaps the strategists be-lieve that if former Nazis were com-pelled to see some of Hollywood's cur-rent crop of B releases, there would be more flicker flinching than a double features' worth of atrocity films. With the documentary visual proof out of the way, the Germans may now feel free to proclaim a "We don't know from borscht" movement. And just in case they do, don't go calling them "su-permen," this time. The idea is not new. Actually, it's as old as the hills,- that is, if the hills are 90 years old. What we're trying to say is that back in 1855, a political party known as the Native American Party or American Party was founded in opposition to steadily increasing immigration. Its aim was to make a twenty-five year residence necessary for citizenship, and to decrease the number of foreign born office holders. At first it was a secret society, and its members, when asked about the movement replied simply, "We know nothing," the Aryanized phrasing of "We don't know from borscht." It may or may not be of special significance that when the group was finally deactivated, the northern Know- Nothings cast their votes with the Republican party. OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: *Whatever else Britain might have done, is doing, or intends to do on the Palestine issue, we sincerely doubt that her royal palm will ever be able to take a hand in shaping the Hebrew language as it has been able to do in forming the Indian tongue. As an illustration of British indoc-trination, "lack of wealth" in the Indian language means "great riches." * * * MY HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED DEPARTMENT: Twenty years ago, Johann Gomboes, brother of the notorious anti-Semitic leader in Hungary committed suicide because of his disappointment at the failure of anti-Semitic policies in Hun-gary. * * * RIPPLING RHYTHM: The atom bomb proponents who have argued with the opponents as to releas-ing the components should listen to an exponent named Arnold Leese. Leese, British anti-Semite, whose scurrilous bulletin "Gothic Ripples"' is widely circulated among bigots, sug-gests that "the strongest weapon you have against Bolshevik Russia is anti- Jewish propaganda." That's one Leese we wouldn't mind seeing expire. SIGN OF THE TIMES: The Fish and Wildlife Service has reported that the nation's rat popula-tion is now about 130 million. - that's roughly about one rat to every person in the country. * * * WE NOMINATE FOR HAPPYDALE: The returned soldier who applied for a divorce on the grounds that while he was in the army his wife changed her sex. And to a male, of all things. * * * LOW LIFE TRIVIA: In his antology, "Ants and Men," Dr. C. P. Haskin carries a step further the parallels between ant and human communities. The expert says that some ant communities are totalitarian and some democratic. We wouldn't be a bit surprised if Westbrook Pegler attempts to prove that the totalitarian communities are built by the Red ant. * * * AD LIB: We still insist that the want ads car-ry more laughs than this column ever will. For proof, we offer the following gagbuster that appeared in a Philadel-phia paper last Sunday: "Student-veteran. Desires part-time position. Married, afternoons only." What a guy ! Current Play Presents Portrait of Brandeis Although Emmet Lavery was primar-ily interested in dramatizing the life of Oliver Wendell Holmes when he set out to write "The Magnificent Yankee" which Arthur Hopkins brought to the Erlanger January 20, he was careful to include an understanding portrait of Holmes' friend and colleague on the Supreme Court bench, Justice Louis Brandeis. As every jurist knows, it was Holmes and Brandeis together whose dissenting opinions rocked the court during the turbulent twenties and adumbrated the course that democracy was eventually to follow under the guidance of Franklin D. Roosevelt. For the role of Brandeis Mr. Hopkins selected Richard Bowler, a veteran ac-tor who lists among his recent assign-ments "Porgy and Bess" and Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians." Lavery allows Holmes to express his viewpoint on racial prejudice in a scene of "The Magnificent Yankee" wherein Henry Adams expresses his misgivings about President Wilson's appointment of a Jew to the Supreme Court. Even the Court itself might not be too dis-appointed, he suggests, if the Senate refuses to confirm the nomination. "Nonsense," replies Holmes. "A few of the brethren may not be keen for Brandeis. But it's his ideas they are afraid of-not his religion. "If Brandeis had never fought the utilities, if he had never taken the part of labor, if he hadn't been quite so successful at it, they would have called him a nice Jew-and accepted him. "The Jews have given a lot to this country and one of their prize con-tributions is Louis Brandeis-and if I were Wilson I'd hang on until hell freezes over-and then skate on top of it."
