Illustrating What High werReayMeans Few things are more confusing to the motor car buyer than the term "horse-power." The confusion is due to the fact that there are two common ways of figuring it. The method used for license purposes is the S. A. E. rating and consists of multiplying the cylinder diameter first by itself, and then by the number of cylinders. The SAc l product is divided by two and one-half to Horse- get the so-called S. A.E.horse-power rating, P o er On this basis the "horse-power" of the -Re - Reo-and of practically all six-cylinder cars- is about 25. This figure has no meaning whatever to the car owner as far -S.A.E as actual motor power is concerned. Horse In fact, the work of power engineers at oe Ppresent is focussed on diminishing the of S. A. E. rating of motors while increasing the actual horse-power. This is true not only of automobile motors for the public, but of special rac-ing motors as well.
