M. to Closing Sunday, 6 P. M. to Closing Delicious Dinner 5 to 9 P. M. $1.00 EXTRA SPECIAL Sunday Dinner The turning point in the history of the American Jewish Community seems to have arrived. The sum of $800,000 was pledged amidst an at-mosphere of enthusiasm and readiness for generous action, at a small gath-ering at the Astor Hotel on the occa-sion of celebrating the first evening of the Feast of .Lights. This sum is a part of the five mil-lion dollar campaign for the purpose of erecting a large and magnificent structure in one of the most prominent sections of New York for the purpose of housing what is termed a "Yeshivah- College." The Yeshivah, under the presidency of Mr. Nathan Lamport, is now housed in one of the poorly equipped buildings on East Broadway. The sudden trans-fer from East Broadway to Amster-dam Avenue is significant, although not so very sudden. The stabilization of Jewish life in this country, is a process which has been going on for many years, and will take a good number of years before it will reach the desired height. Orthodox Judaism has been for many centuries the res-ervoir of force and mental energy for all the movements and lines of thought that spring up within the Jewish fold. Attacked by every new movement under all circumstances, Orthodox Judaism withstood all, even though at times the battle was none too mild. The history of the reform movement in Germany, Austria, Hungary and France would justify one to expect a similar strife in the American Jewish Community. This seems, however, not to be the case in this country. Through the smoothening influence of the en-vironment and the broader view as dictated by the Spirit of Democracy, the contours of a consolidated Jewish communal life, running peacefully Along three parallel lines-Reformed, Conservative and Orthodox, come to the surface. Of the three Orthodox Judaism, representative of the newer generations of American Judaism, was until recently too much in the back-ground. Lack of effort for self-preser-vation and adaptation to environment, demonstrated by complete lack of or-ganization and dependence upon other sections of the community, have been the outstanding charges. The vigor-ous attempt now made by the leaders of the Yeshivah College will, no doubt, be greeted joyfully by all those who have the interests of the Jewish learn-ing, coupled with systemized secular education at heart. Col. Frederick H. Kisch, political representative of the Zionist Executive in Palestine, English diplomat, arriv-ing in this country, depicted in a very descriptive manner, in a conversation with a representative of the press, both the political and economic devel-opment in Palestine during recent years. Col. Kisch, a British Jew, enlisted in the service of rebuilding Palestine by Dr. Weizmann, is the most con-vincing proof of how far the rebuild-ing of Palestine has advanced and be-come an actual task to be dealt with in a businesslike and efficient way-in a way that is dictated by the interests of a country and community, though the country and community are only growing. When listening to Col. Kisch, one feels that the problems presenting themselves for solution are not to be looked upon as insurmountable ob-stacles, but as difficulties to be fought against and overcome. In the fluency of language that only British diplo-mats know how to make use of, the situation appears to be substantially, smooth, and if not entirely so, possi-ble to be smoothened out. Two million pounds have been brought annually in the past four years through various Jewish organi-zations and enterprises into the coun-try. An increase of 50% in the Jewish population in the last four years, has been witnessed, without causing any serious disturbances in the structure of the economic fabric. An influx of 2,400 immigrants is the monthly av-erage. The opening of the Hebrew University with its possibility to be-come the spiritual center for the Jews all over the world-in the presenta-tion of Col. Kisch-is indeed a sound basis for expecting still greater and more rapid developments. As to the Arabs, it would be incor-rect to suggest that there are among the Arabs no opponents to the develop-ment of the country by Jews. Such opponents, however, are to be found in the limited sphere of the more or less provincial Arabs. The Arab peas-ants who form the bulk of the popula-tion are associating in close relation-ship with the Jewish settlements. Economic co-operation, even between those who are politically opposed, is a matter of fact. The presents of Col. Kisch and the rebuilding of Palestine will bring con-viction of greater weight even to those who are skeptical. You have probably read on many oc-casions recently about the Monday Opera Club. The Monday Opera Club has in reality no connection with any-thing specifically Jewish. Its interest in the pretentions to the Russian throne, made it of Jewish interest. You have not, however, heard of the "Thursday Gemara Club." This club, as is obvious, has quite a strong af-fiflation with Jews. It ought to be more widely known in other cities. A number of Jewish business men, professional men, leaders, (mind you, not Rabbis) have formed a club which is to be known under the name "Chavrutha." Chavrutha is an Ara-maic word equivalent to our fashion-able Society. It is indeed an interest-ing society. Its purpose is none other than social. Its function is dining once a month together. No rabbis, no women admitted. No lectures, no speeches are delivered. Nevertheless, the functions held so far proved to be very successful and stimulated interest in Jewish problems and social prob-lems in general. The "tired American business man" is proverbial. The tired American Jewish business man in New York is searching for his salvation. The Chav-rutha seems to be a good start in the direction towards creating Jewish in-tellectual entertainment for exclusive groups. The Chavrutha is exclusive. No official announcement has as yet been made as to its formation. The officers may resent any indiscretion. (Copyright Jewish Telegraphic Agency.)
