THE SENTINEL MEXICO WELCOMES JEWISH IMMIGRATION. Chicago (J. T. A.)-The Mexican government is prepared to throw open the gates of Mexico to masses of east European Jews, as forecast by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in previous dispatches. The offer to permit the immigration of Jews into Mexico is contained in a letter of May 10, addressed to Paul W. Rothenberg, a lawyer, of 1630 South Sawyer avenue, who conducted the negotiations with the Mexican author-ities. The letter of President Obregon from the National Palace, Mexico City, reads: "In reference to our conversation relative to the emigration of Russian Jews to the Republic of Mexico, I am pleased to advise that the government which I take honor in presiding over would be glad to see that emigration; but I deem it advisable to state that if the emigrants want to acquire any real estate in the Republic of Mexico, they must naturalize themselves as Mexican citizens, since our statutes establish that foreigners shall not acquire prop-erties within a zone of 100 parallel to the borders, and 50 kilometers from the seaside. "In the country there are several million hectares of land appropriate for colonization purposes, a great part of which is susceptible of adaptation for agriculture and irrigation. You may be sure that the emigrants to which I have been referring by sub-mitting themselves as already stated by me, to what is provided by the constitution for the acquisition of property-will enjoy the guarantees, security and protection which are granted to all citizens by the Republic of Mexico. "I have already taken up this matter with Senator Schleimer of Arizona, in the interview that I had the pleasure of having with him in this capital, and who will be able to give you many more details than it is possible to convey in a letter. "With my personal regards, "I am, "Yours very truly, "(Signed) 'A. Obregon.'" Mr. Rothenberg has also been noti-fied that a territory of 64,000 square miles along the American-Mexican border is at the disposal of Jewish im-migrants. The territory is said to be very fertile, enjoys a salubrious cli-mate, snow and cold being unknown, has vast agricultural possibilities, is described as full of natural resources, with facilities- for fishing and being rich in timber, is believed to be entire-ly fitted for industry and agriculture. The area is sparsely populated, its present population being only 25,000, PHONE MIDWAY 9690 We Deur AUPself f Gy Eastman Ploral Shop 1322 EAST 634 STREET although it is twice as large as Bel-gium. This particular part of Mexico is said not to have suffered from any of the many revolutions, and because of its geographic location cannot be af-fected by uprisings. A group of prominent Chicago Jews is preparing to proceed to Mexico within a few days to look over the ground, which the government is ready 'to assign to Jewish immigrants, pro-ceeding from there to Mexico City to complete negotiations. It is then in-tended to form an organization in the United States to finance the immigra-tion. It is hoped that the transfer of tens of thousands of Jews to Mexico will follow the agreement that govern-ment and shipping companies will be induced to grant cheaper transporta-tion. It is understood that the government of the United States is favorably dis-posed towards the proposal, and that Secretary Hughes will soon issue a statement to that effect. In quarters close to the initiators of the idea, it is considered likely that Israel Zangwill may become interested in the movement, eventually coming to America to assume leadership there-of. 1. O.
