RYE BREAD CHICAGO'S BEST JEWISH PEOPLE'S INSTITUTE "Anatole France: The Development of a Master," Next Subject in Con-temporary Literature Series The next lecture in the series on contemporary literature given by J. Hugo Feldman under the general title of "Literary Landmarks" will be given on Monday, May 19, on "Anatole France: The Development of a Mas-ter." The work and life of this great French writer will be reviewed by the speaker in the light of his influence on contemporary thought. It will be shown that his inherent skepticism early dominated his outlook. In Syl-vestre Bonnard, in Thais, in La vie litteraire, an elegant irony deepened into sarcasm, leavened by humor and Gallic wit. George N. Kotin Will Discuss "Business Law" George N. Kotin will speak on "Business Law" at the institute next Wednesday evening, May 21, in the course on "Modern Methods in Busi-ness" which is being given by leading Chicago business executives. This dis-cussion will be on the fundamentals of business which should be known to everyone connected with a business enterprise. There is no subject more important for the business man to know than the law that pertains to business and there is no subject that is perhaps less studied though it in-volves the very life of the business at times and affects the small business man as well as the largest. The following week, on May 28, the last lecture in this series will be given by C. F. Strodel, supervisor of theaters of Balaban & Katz, on "Young Men and Their Jobs." ANNUAL MEETING OF THE J. I. A. S. OF CANADA TO BE HELD AT MONTREAL The annual meeting of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society of Canada, af-filiated with the Hias and Hicem, will I be held Sunday, May 18, at Montreal. Among the other outstanding immi-gration problems to be given consider-ation at the meeting will be the re-cent change of the jurisdiction in Ca-nadian immigration matters from the federal government at Ottawa to the various provincial governments which is bound to have a decided effect on Jewish immigration to Canada. Adolph Copeland, president of the Chicago Hias, who has made a study of immigration conditions in Canada last year after his return from Europe and kept in constant touch with the immigration work in Can-ada, will address the annual meeting and will take part in the delibera-tions. Mr. Copeland will also visit the main office of Hias at New York and the Hias Bureau at Washington to consult on a number of important mat-ters arising from the pending immi-gration and naturalization legislation. THE CONNECTION "They claim to be connected with some of the best families." "Yes, by telephone." THE SICK LION Trotzky's autobiography makes fascinating reading for Bolshevik and capitalist alike. By now the Jews will have read it carefully, and collated all the passages which have to do with them. These passages are few-and only one is significant; but so signifi-cant that it could be made the thesis of a book. He writes, on page 361: "The question of my Jewish origin acquired importance only after I had become a sub-ject for political baiting. Anti- Semitism raised its head with that of anti-Trotzkyism. They both derived from the same source-the petty bourgeois reac-tion against October (the great Bolshevik revolution)." Here are the first questions that this pas-sage suggests: 1. Did anti-Sem-itism remain dormant during the big days of the revolution simply because the Bolsheviks were using the Jews (Trotzky, Joffe, Radek, etc.) as long as they were needed, and threw them into the discard when their usefulness was over? ("In the years of the revolu-tionary ascendancy," writes Trotzky, "this question never had the slightest importance.") 2. If this is true, does the situation differ from any other political situation in which Jews are used as the advance guard and finally disowned? For example, the So-cialist movement in various coun-tries, the struggle for liberty in Poland and elsewhere? 3. If it is not true, how shall we interpret Trotzky's statement? a. Does he believe what he says? b. If he does, what hope has he for the disappearance of anti-Semitism even in Bolshevist Russia? c. If he does not believe what he says, " is he merely using his Jewish origin, which he ignored till now, as a political weapon, behaving like the stupidest and meanest Jewish renegade who forgets about his ostracised people until he finds it convenient to whine: "Oi, die antisemiten!"
