THE SENTINEL JEWISH POPULATION IN EAST-ERN EUROPE PREPARES FOR PASSOVER RIGA (J. T. A.)-Passover will be celebrated this year in Russia, the Ukraine and White Russia as in the "old days," reports received here from Soviet Russia indicate. The Jewish communities throughout the territory which comprised the for-mer Russian empire are busy with preparations for the celebration of the holiday. Even in the Soviet. co-operative stpres, special sales of mat-zos, Passover wines and spirits are being held. A feature of the Pass-over season is the placing on the mar-ket of a red covered Haggadah. For the first time since the out-break of the war, Russian Jews will have Palestine oranges on their tables this Passover due to a recent ship-ment which has arrived. The Jewish Communist press is, as usual, publishing articles attacking the holiday, but there is no general anti-religious campaign. It is inter-esting that the majority of the settlers in the new Jewish colonies have de-manded that they be supplied with matzos. WARSAW (J. T. A.)-The ap-proaching week of Passover is felt in every town in the Republic of Poland where there is a Jewish community. Life in many homes has brightened due to the receipt of substantial amounts of Passover money from American relatives, according to the custom of providing their needy breth-ren with Passover fare. A band of swindlers has taken ad-vantage of the Passover season and is-sued forged checks on American banks. The forged checks were presented in several Warsaw banks which have suf-fered heavy losses as a result of this. The checks were issued in small amounts, all under $100 and therefore aroused little suspicion. The checks were made out in the name of well known American banks which enjoy credit in Poland. Many arrests were made in connection with this discov-ery of the plot in Warsaw, Vilna and Bialystok. Twenty of the arrested were sentenced to imprisonment. More arrests are expected. ANOTHER HERBERT SAMUEL CANDIDATE WINS LONDON (S: A.)-Mr. B. Straus, a Jew, who was running on the Lib-eral ticket in the Southwick district of London, has been elected to the House of Parliament. Mr. Straus' election is the second victory of the Liberal party of England since Sir Herbert Samuel undertook to reorgan-ize the party. P 0 L I S H GOVERNMENT SEEKS OPINIONS ON SUNDAY REST LAW WARSAW (J. T. A.)-Steps to ascertain the opinion of Polish Jewry as to the workings of the compulsory Sunday Rest Law were taken by the Polish Ministry of the Interior. The Ministry called a conference of Jewish social and communal workers to obtain their opinion with regard to the advisability of changing the law. Deputies Wislicki, Trockenheim and Hartglass, speaking in behalf of the Jewish Merchants' Association, ex-pressed the opinion that the law be amended to the effect that a five-hour period of business be allowed to Jew-ish merchants on Sunday. Mr. Lew of the Poale Zion and Mr. Alter of the Bund demanded that the working class be given the opportunity of free choice between Saturday and Sunday rest. One delegate, Okrant, an ex-treme Left, expressed satisfaction with the status quo. Delegate Ratner, speaking in behalf of the artisans, de-manded that the artisans have the freedom of working the entire day Sunday. The conference will last some time, it was stated, as many organizations were called to express their opinions. All representatives of Polish Chris-tian organizations spoke against changing the law. GEN. LUDENDORFF'S WIFE JOINS ANTI-SEMITES BERLIN (S. A.)-Gen. Ludendorff, formerly of the German Imperial Army, is a notorious anti-Semite. He recently married again, and it seems that his wife holds Ludendorff's ideas on the Jews. Last week she was chief speaker at an anti-Jewish demonstra-tion. Had the speech been delivered in Russia during the days of the czar, it would have been considered an address directly intended to stir up pogrom sentiment. Mme. Luden-dorf's participation in the anti-Semitic assembly has caused anxiety among Berlin Jews, inasmuch as she is a noted orator. JEW APPOINTED SOVIET COM-MERCIAL REPRESENTATIVE IN LONDON RIGA (J. T. A.)-M. Chintschuk was appointed commercial representa-tive of the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics in London, a despatch from Moscow states. Klara Zelkin, chairman of the Mopr, an organization to aid the class war prisoners and workmen who have lost their positions because of political per-secutions, was appointed chairman of the Central Council of the Russian Co-operatives.
