The ability of the bank to dis-charge its obligations to the depositors is, in the final analysis, PROOF OF ITS STRENGTH. UNIVERSITY STATE BANK A CLEARING HOUSE BANK 1354 EAST 55th STREET CORNER RIDGEWOOD COURT President Lebrun of France has sent a message to the Jewish National Fund expressing the deepest sympathy with its aims. * * * An all-Palestine Dentists Conven-tion was held in Tel Aviv last week. Arab dentists refused to participate in the sessions which continued for two days. * * * Herbert Askwith, formerly manag-ing editor of the "Menorah Journal", and of the "World Review," was ap-pointed director of the American of-fice of the Hebrew University, at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the American Friends of the He-brew University. He is a graduate of Harvard University and a native of Boston. * * * The eighth academic year of the He-brew University will begin at the end of this month. Plans have been made for the formal opening of the Physics Building of the Einstein Institute, funds for which have been contributed by the late Philip Wattenberg, and Solomon and Dora Shapiro of New York. * * * Chief Rabbi Hevesty has wired Premier Julius Gomboes thanking him for his recent declaration in Parlia-ment regarding his attitude toward the Jews. On October 11, Premier Gomboes, formerly leader of an anti- Semitic party, disavowed anti-Semi-tism, declaring that he considers as a Hungarian brother every Jew who shares in the common fate of Hun-gary. * * * M. M. Ussishkin, president of the Jewish National Fund, appointed H. Esrachi, by telegraph, Commissar for Poland, over the heads of the Polish parties. The action was taken by the world president of the J. N. F. be-cause of the refusal of the general Zionists to sit on any directorate with Revisionists with the result that the winter campaign of the fund was threatened. "We cannot tolerate these internal party fights which are damag-ing the Jewish National Fund," Us-sishkin telegraphed. * * * Delayed reports regarding anti- Jewish disturbances in the provinces on the Day of Atonement reaching Berlin, reveal that at Beuthen, where the death sentence, later commuted, was passed on five Nazis, a large throng of boys surrounded the syna-gogue, shouting: "The heads of the Jews will roll". Worshippers asked the boys to depart, but they could be prevailed upon to do so only by the police. In Christburg, East Prussia, youths stoned a synagogue as the Kol Nidre services were in progress. * * * For the first time since its commis-sion form of government went into effect in 1917, Newark has a Jewish City Commissioner. Dr. Meyer C. Ellenstein was named by the four other commissioners to head the De-partment of Public Welfare, made va-cant nearly a month ago by the death of the late Commissioner John F. Murray, Jr. Dr. Ellenstein was a can-didate for commissioner at the last city election in May, 1929, running sixth and polling more than 33,000 votes. The four commissioners took more than 150 ballots before they finally agreed upon Ellenstein, Direc-tors Egan and Gillen, Democrats, urg-ing his selection from the very be-ginning of the balloting, while Mayor Congleton and Director Howe, Repub-licans, opposed him. Among the hun-dreds who appeared before the Com-mission to urge the Ellenstein appoint-ment were Rabbi Solomon Foster, of Temple B'nai Jeshurun; Rabbi Julius Silberfeld, of Temple B'nai Abraham; Edgar S. Bamberger, and among others, a representative Negro as well as the head of the Greek-American Association of Newark. Mitchell Levensohn, who received his Ph.D. in the field of classics from Yale University in 1931, has been ap-pointed instructor of classics in Yale College, and is believed to be the first Jew to be appointed to the faculty of Yale College. * * * Major EmiI Fey, commander of the Vienna Heimwehr, immediately after being appointed Minister for Security by Chancellor Dollfuss, issued a de-cree forbidding all public demonstra-tions by Nazis, Socialists and Com-munists. * * * At the opening of the Law School of the University of Warsaw, as a result of the charged atmosphere, the Dean ordered the Jews and Christians to separate in the lecture halls, the Christians oecupying the right benches and the Jews the left. Wiktor Luczak, a National Demo-cratic leader in Prussia, was sentenced to ten months imprisonment after be-ing found guilty of organizing an at-tack upon the Jews last December. Four other National Democrats held on the same charge were acquitted. * * * A memorial to the late Siegried Marcus, Jewish inventor of the motor car in Austria, was dedicated in Vien-na last week, at the Polytechnic Gar-dens with festive ceremonies. The Minister of Commerce, Jaconcig, and representatives of the municipality and of science and industry partici-pated in the ceremonies. * * * The "London News Chronicle," liberal daily, discussing the case of Libby Holman, indicted in connection with the death of her husband Smith Reynolds, tobacco millionaire, asserts that the indictment against Miss Hol-man was returned because the Grand Jury was prejudiced against her be-cause she is a Jewess. * * * The Jews of Coburg were thrown into a panic when 35,000 Storm Troops from Berlin, who were re-viewed by Adolph Hitler, proceeded to march through the Jewish quarter where the Socialist headquarters, dis-playing a republican flag, are located. The police cleared the streets of the Storm Troops, not before, however, a number of policemen and Hitlerites sustained injuries. No Jews were wounded, but all were badly fright-ened. * * * Sara Feder has been appointed Sociology Professor in the University of Missouri, in the Department of Rural Sociology. For many years she was Civic Secretary of the Chicago Woman's Aid. She has also spent a great deal of time in Zionist work, especially that connected with the co-operative movement and women's ag-riculture, schools and institutions in Palestine. She was a delegate to the 16th Zionist Congress at Zurich. Her husband, Dr. I. Keyfitz, occupies the Chair of Jewish Learning as Professor of Semitic Language, History, and In-stitutions at the Bible College con-nected with the University of Mis-souri. * * * Simon N. Stein, noted Jewish leader and Philanthropist, was re-elected president of the Rochester Civic Mu-sic Association at its annual meeting. The Association also elected Sol Heu-mann and Arthur M. Lowenthal to the Board of Directors for three years; Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein of Temple B'rith Kodesh, former Congressman Meyer Jacobstein, Simon N. Stein and Henry M. Stern, for two year terms, and Mrs. William I. Rosenberg for one year. The Association has a member-ship of 3,500 men and women who sponsor and support the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rochester Civic Orchestra a'nd concerts and re-citals at the Eastman Theatre.
