A.)-The resolution introduced in the House of Represent-atives favouring the retention of the quota law, as reported in a Jewish Correspondence Bureau dispatch, is re-garded as the only ray of hope by the thousands of Ukrainian refugees con-gregated here iwho had despaired of admission to the United States follow-ing publication of a telegram that the Committee had recommended complete suspension of immigration to the Unit-ed States. Thousands of refugees are literally besieging the offices of the Jewish newspapers here and also that of the Jewish Correspondence Bureau, clam-oring for fuller details of the Con-gressional action with reference to immigration legislation. "THE CAUSE OF HUMANITY." Omaha, Neb.-John A. Swanson, president of a large clothing establish-mien', in this city, is a Lutheran. The creed to which his partner, William L. Holzman subscribes is easily guessed when it is stated that Mr. Holzman is Nebraska state chairman of the Jewish War Relief Campaign. No two business associates ever got along better than these two do, but if it wasn't for their diversity of faith this story could nev-er have been written. When the state Jewish War Relief conference was held here on February 5, there were in attendance, besides representative Jews from all parts of Nebraska, three Chicago men who are prominently identified with the drive. They were Charles Rubens, zone chair-man in charge of the campaign for funds in ten middle western states; Superior Court Judge Harry M. Fisher and Marcy I. Berger, zone secretary. The visitors stayed over twenty-four hours after the conference to help the local men get started in their effort to raise Nebraska's $125,000 quota toward the $14,000,000 national fund being collected for war sufferers in Eastern and Central Europe. Accom-panied by Mr. Holzman, Henry Monsky, Harry Wolf and Henry Lapidus, they made the rounds of the leading Jewish merchants, explaining the need of help for their coreligionists overseas and ob-taining their checks and pledges. They wound up at Mr. Holzman's office. He introduced his partner to the Chicago men. "Swanson?" Mr. Rubens remarked. "H-in-in! You're a Lutheran, I sup-pose." Mr. Swanson admitted it. 'Well, we've been busy cracking a few hard nuts in our own camp," Mr. Rubens said, "and haven't got to work on Lutherans yet. But some of the boys will be around to see you before the drive is over."~ "Send 'em along; I'm ready any time," said Mr. Swanson and went back to his desk. "Say, Harry," Mr. Rubens drew Judge Fisher to one side, "you better go over and interview himt now. You know the slogan of this campaign is: 'Jews mnust give; non-Jews are invited to give.' The Judge followed orders and ap-p~ roaching Mr. Swanson, proceeded to tell him that at least thirty per cent of the Jewish War Relief was neces-sarily distributed among non-Jews in the communities in Eastern and Cen-tral Europe where the Joint Distribu-tion Committee operates. "Sure, I know," replied Mr. Swan-son. ''You don't have to tell mie. I'll give you a check." Mr. Swanson smilingly handed him a check for $500. "My religion teaches," said Mr. Swanson, "that it is more blessed to give than to receive. This cause is bigger than any creed. It is the cause of humanity." ROGERS PARK FOOD SHOP S. Davis, Prop. R.
