RULES ON ELECTION DISPUTE
IN TEL-AVIV
LONDON (J. T. A.)-The Tel-Aviv
election dispute which threatened to
divide the Tel-Aviv municipality, was
settled by Chief Justice Haycraft of
the Palestine Supreme Court, accord-ing
to a report to the London "Times."
The recent elections to the munici-pality
gave the majority to the labor
groups, in spite of the fact that the
majority of the inhabitants belong to
the middle-class. As a result of this
the middle-class representatives with-drew
from the municipal government.
Steps were taken on the part of cer-tain
groups to bring about a modifica-tion
in the electoral system of the Tel-
Aviv municipality, aiming at a new
definition of the right to vote and
the age limit of the voters.
A suggestion was also made that
the right to vote be granted only to
those residents who pay a certain
amount of taxes.
Chief Justice Haycraft moved that
all tax-payers are entitled to vote in
the municipal elections-adults of both
sexes. Women are not entitled to vote
unless they are paying direct taxes.
We hear that a certain trade union
recently ordered a "go slow" strike
of its members, and was very much
upset because the employers didn't
notice any difference."-Punch.
FINDS IMPORTANT DOCUMENT O1
NAPOLEONIC PERIOD
WARSAW (J. T. A.)-An impor-tant
document of Jewish history in
Poland during the Napoleonic period
was found by Dr. I. Schipper, Polish-
Jewish historian and member of Par-liament.
Dr. Schipper found documentary evi-dence
to the effect that a Polish
Jew named Kempner assisted Napoleon
greatly in his conquest of Warsaw.
Kempner later became a member of
Napoleon's general staff. The docu-ment
bears the handwriting of Na-poleon.
The majority of Kempner's descend-ants
have embraced Catholicism and
changed their name to Kempinsky.
POLISH PARLIAMENT UNWILLING
TO DISSOLVE
WARSAW (J. T. A.)-The motion
that the Polish Sejm, following its de-cision
to grant broad powers to the
Bartel government, be dissolved, was
defeated by a majority vote.
The motion was introduced by the
Left groups in the House. It was
strongly opposed by the representa-tives
of the Right parties who argued
that the control of the Sejm over
the Bartel government is necessary be-cause
of the existence of "the danger
that the government will sell Poland
to Gruenbaum's chosen people."
The Sejm ended its summer sessions
and will reconvene in September.
