June 5, 1931 THE SENTINEL REPORTS 4,228,000 JEWS IN UNITED STATES New York (W. N. S.)-There were 4,228,000 Jews in the United States at the end of 1927, according to figures published in "Statistics of Jews, 1931," compiled by Dr. Harry S. Linfield, of the statistical depart-ment of the American Jewish Commit-tee. Approximately 85 per cent of this population was located in cities of 100,000 or more.- Although Dr. Linfield emphasizes that the bulk of the Jewish population is to be found in larger cities, Jews live in every State and in nearly 10,000 urban and rural communities. The report shows that 11,526 Jews were admitted to the United States in 1930, 96 per cent of them coming to join relatives. In citing figures to show the relation of Jewish groups to the total population in various States, Dr. Linfield says that Jews constitute 16.67 per cent of the popu-lation in New York State, 6.01 in New Jersey, 5.59 in Connecticut, 5.32 in Massachusetts, 4.74 in Illinois, 4.44 in Maryland, 4.16 in Pennsylvania. The smallest percentage is found in Idaho, where the Jews are 0.21 per cent of the residents. Between 1881 and 1930, 2,438,994 Jews entered the United States of a total of 27,567,583 immigrants ad-mitted to the country. During the same period 113,099 Jews left the United States. The largest percent-age of Jews in any country is in Palestine, where they constitute 18 per cent of the population. JEWISH CHORUS REPLACES GEN-TILE QUARTET AT CLEVE-LAND TEMPLE Cleveland (J. T. A.)-James H. Rogers, organist and musical director of the Euclid Avenue Temple for fifty years, has been succeeded by Griffiths Jones. He is now organizing a large Jewish chorus to take the place of the Gentile quartet. The chorus will specialize in mod-ern arrangements of traditional Jew-ish music. The plan is aimed. to af-ford a mode of self-expression to a large number of young Jewish people who have trained in voice. Mr. Jones will endeavor to build up this chorus so that in time it may be able to give Jewish cantatas as well as render synagogual music. The Jewish chorus is part of a pro-gram by Rabbi B. R. Brickner, spir-itual leader of the Euclid Avenue Temple, to reintroduce into the re-form temple much of the elements of Jewish tradition. In line with this policy, Rabbi Brickner has brought back the Kol Nidre, the Yizkor Serv-ice on the last day of Passover, has introduced the Consecration Service for the children who commence the religious school on the last day of Succoth, and also the teaching of Hebrew in all the classes of the Sun-day school. The Euclid Avenue Temple is the oldest congregation in Cleveland. GERMAN MAYOR ASKS GUARAN-TEE OF TWO JEWISH CORPSES WEEKLY BEFORE SANCTION-ING CEMETERY Berlin (J. T. A.)-If the Jewish community will guarantee him at least two Jewish corpses a week, he will gladly grant it the requsite permis-sion to buy a piece of ground for a cemetery. This statement was made by the mayor of a small town in the province of Hesse, to a delegation of Jews that waited on him, according to a report in a recent issue of the Welt am Montag. The report states that only thirty Jewish families live in the town, and that the Jews there must carry their dead a distance of twelve kilometers to the cemetery of another Jewish community. A delegation of the Jew-ish community in the Hessian town therefore asked the mayor to give them permission to buy a plot for. their own cemetery.
