Increasingly it is being recognized that all Jews must stand together in such far-reaching effort as the Jewish Agency is charged with carrying on in Palestine, and unitedly see it through to a successful con-clusion. Any sane and self-respecting Jew realizes it is a privi-lege to stand at Mr. Warburg's side in such a cause, aye to sit at his feet and learn from him the way to go and the way to work to serve his people. It is perhaps more important that the efforts being made to bring about united action in Jewry through the Jewish Agency shall not fail than that the great promise in Palestine where dur-ing the past ten years the Jewish population has increased from 65,000 to 172,000, and the area of land held by Jews has in-creased from 115,000 acres to 300,000 acres, shall not be frustrated and defeated. The dinner next Tuesday night at the Standard Club will tell whether the Jews of Chicago are capable of appre-ciating the changed emphasis in Jewish life. -A. A. FREEDLANDER. JL I THE AGENCY DINNER The presence of Felix M. Warburg as guest of honor of the Chicago Jewish Community at a dinner to be given next Tues-day night at the Standard Club, gives the occasion an importance far greater than that of an ordinary Zionist drive for funds. Mr. Warburg 's mission is not merely to spur and speed up the efforts of local Zionist leaders to make a creditable showing in the national campaign now being conducted to raise $2,500,000 for Palestine, although he is earnestly concerned that Chicago shall as soon as possible raise its quota of $150,000 as a number of other communities have already filled the quotas assigned them or are actively engaged in doing so. Mr. Warburg does not go around the country for the vain purpose of parading his prestige and position in American Jewry. His presence is notice that a serious situation exists and a summons to meet the situation as adequately and as worthily a s he personally does. Chicago needs a shake-up more than a shake-down. The dinner next Tuesday night is primarily an Agency dinner whose main purpose is to bring home to the Jews of Chi-cago, particularly those who have not been identified with Zionist activity, a realization of the duty of all whether they are in sympathy with Zionist national aspirations in Palestine or not, to strengthen the Jewish Agency to enable it to safeguard valid and vital Jewish interests in the old Homeland. Much more important than the Zionists who will be seen at the dinner will be the non-Zionists of standing in the community who will put in an appearance. The dinner will make it clear whether the Jewish Agency is a fact in the Chicago Jewish Com-munity or merely a term, and whether the Jews of Chicago are big enough to rise above divisions and the counsel of illiberal and intolerant leadership, and join hands and hearts in the further-ance of Jewish interests, for that is the prime function of the Jewish Agency although its scope of effort is confined to Pales-tine. Mr. Warburg symbolizes Jewish unity as no other living figure in American Jewry does. He sees beyond the narrow limits of any particular movement with which he is identified. If any leader can be said to stand always on the firing-line for Jewry, it is Felix M. Warburg, a philanthropist in the fullest Jewish sense of the term. He embodies and is deepening and broadening a great tradition in American Jewry, loyally and ably perpetuating the spirit and carrying on the work of his illustrious father-in-law of revered memory, the late Jacob M. Schiff, and of those other heroic American Jewish figures, Nathan Straus and Louis Marshall to whom whatever is Jewish was never alien, whose mantle has descended upon his worthy shoulders. There is great need of the Jewishness exemplified in Felix M. Warburg, a Jewishness that eclipses narrow loyalties as the refulgence of the full-risen sun pales the puny, flickering flame of a candle. In the luminous presence of Felix M. Warburg, lesser leadership is revealed in all its petty and pitiable in-effectualness. The Agency dinner at the Standard Club made notable by Mr. Warburg's presence, offers an opportunity to the Jews of Chicago to rally to the side of a leadership that shines with zeal for all things Jewish under whatever name they may go. None can deny, in spite of the failure of the Allied Jewish Campaign, that a change in attitude has come about that offers great promise for the future, when those long-known for their uncompromising opposition to all things Zionistic are not only abating their opposi-j 1 THE SE June 5,1931
