But it should not be forgotten that if we are able to accept the Japanese as the descendants of the lost ten Jewish tribes, we then lose the British as our relations; for up till now the British were considered descendants of the ten tribes: The question arises now whether it pays to trade the Englishman for the Japanese? You may suggest that it does not depend upon our willingness to trade. But we must follow the dictates of science which tells us that the Japanese are our relations and not the British; but it must also be born in mind that one may haggle a bit, even with science because science itself is not always absolutely scientific. "Besides, it is not absolutely neces-sary to haggle at all, as it was not as yet scientifically proven that the pres-ent day Jews are in any way related to the lost ten tribes. Quite the con-trary. Some scientific students deny that the present European Jews are the descendants of the ancient Semitic Jews who conquered Palestine. They claim that the European Jews and those Jews who came from Europe to America are not Semites at all. "Recently, this theory was ad-vanced by an Arabic paper in Pales-tine.. Besides, the ancient well-known arguments that the European Jews do not look like Semites, this paper advances the claim that the Jews of Europe are incapable of pronouncing certain Hebrew letters, particularly those with gutteral sound; and, the paper says, that the Yeminite Jews are the only real Semites. The Yemin-ite Jews have both the Semitic countenance and accept. They pro-nounce the gutteral letters of the Hebrew language differently from the European Jews. Their pronouncia-tion is the real Semitic. "Now, then, if we are not Semites, the ten lost Jewish tribes are not our relations, and there is no difference to us who their descendants are, the British or the Japanese." * * * * A Lockout in Palestine Commenting on a news dispatch from Jaffa to the Morning Journal reporting that the builders of Tel- Aviv locked out their employees be-cause they attempted to establish a labor dictatorship in the coming mu-nicipal elections, the Communist Freiheit, in an editorial of February 6th, points out that Palestine is be-coming quite modern. "It is true," the Freiheit says, "that the election in which the workers were to estab-lish a dictatorsip, has not occurred yet. But their intention is enough. And the employers feel that they ought to be taught a lesson for that. And the lockout is an excellent means. Considering that there is very little work to be gotten in Palestine, and that the unemployed are compelled to starve, it is quite clear that if the workers can be starved to death be-fore the municipal election in that 'great' cityr of Tel-Aviv there will be no dictatorship. All this is clear and self-evident. "On second thought, we realize that the builders in the land of our fathers, are not original at all. A few weeks ago we had read of another Jewish lockout in Poland. In this country the Zionistically inclined cobblers were infuriated by the fact that their employes refused to listen to a Zion-ist address in Hebrew and in order to teach the workers good manners, they were locked out for slighting the Holy language. Incidentally, of course, they tried to reduce wages, increase the hours of labor and destroy the union of the workers. But the original excuse was quite sacred. They were locked out because they did not show sufficient respect for the Hebrew language." The Freiheit concludes its editorial with a sermon on the class struggle, stating that wherever there are em-ployers and employes, there must be lockouts and strikes and it therefor urges the Jewish workers not to be misled by the propaganda in favor of a renaissance of the Jewish nation. HIGH SHOES VERSUS OXFORDS (By Dr. Maurice R. Udell-Foot Specialist) There seems to be an impression among the public and certain shoe-fitters, that after symptoms of foot strain have manifested themselves an oxford should no longer be worn, that the proper support for the foot can be provided only with a high shoe. When it is explained that the factors of the foot strain are faulty architecture and disturbed statics of the foot and that these can usually be corrected with a shoe having a proper arch and heel, the necessity and value of a pliable or soft upper-about an ankle are open to doubt. If the ligaments and muscles about the ankle are weak, proper soles, heels, and a well-fitting shoe through the long arch and ball of the foot will usually overcome this difficulty and the support about the ankle is unneces-sary. Whereas if the sole, heel and shank of the shoe, that is the part of the sole that fits up under the long arch of the foot, is incorrect, no amount of lacing about the ankle will prove of value. As a rule, then, most people who desire exfords for summer wear, even in the presence of foot symptoms can wear them with comfort if the proper type is selected. The upper comes in for considera-tion only in those instances where fac-tors of foot warmth, moist feet, and foot irritation are to be considered. In this connection I want to mention the value of insulated soles, cushion soles, etc., for individuals with a rheu-matic tendency. Unquestionably a properly insulated sole protects such persons from the damp and cold earth and pavement which is a big factor in influencing the symptoms of this con-dition. The foregoing discussion applies only to the average foot with slight static or functional derangement and should not be confounded with the treatment of structurally deformed feet. No one should suffer unneces-sarily from conditions of the feet, either through improper shoeing or neglect. If the wearing of a correct shoe alone does not prove sufficient to relieve you of your foot ailment, please bear this in mind, that in many cases a painful foot cannot be corrected just by putting on a correct shoe, since it also needs professional treatment, a.g. find the cause, etc. When buying from our advertisers, please mention The Sentinel.
