Clark St. : OUR SERVICE REACHES EVERYWHERE TELEPHONE LINCOLN 0120 ...............:: ................. * Judaism in Modern Christianity By DAVID STARR JORDAN President Emeritus of Leland Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif. Rabbi Newman of our Temple Enxanu-El in San Francisco in his massive and learned -work on "Jewish Influence on Christian Reform" has opened up a line of scholarship which is truly monumental in its scope. We are told that the present work of seven hundred pages is only a beginning or first chapter in the study of the re-lations of Jewish scholarship and Jew-ish opinions in the development of Christianity. It took a long time and much effort to bring the Old Testament, with its Jewish history, poetry, tradition and symbolism into the recognized Bible, and once accomplished, the inability of the "Nordic" mind to discriminate among these types of oriental litera-ture has been the source of much dis-cord and heart burning. When this absorption was finally accomplished, the Hebrew conception of the Deity became an integral part of Calvinism and largely of American Puritanism. Says Rabbi Newman: "It was the unique contribution of Puritanism, not only to maintain the supremacy of the 'Law of Nature' but to link up the 'Law of God' with the Spiritual Word. To the Puritan the Decalogue was the divine confirmation and interpretation of Natural Law." In regard to the work of Luther, it is interesting to note that his first great ambition was "to convert Jews en masse to Christianity, and not by what he called the cruel and blunt methods of the papists, but by kind-ness and argument." To this end he wrote (1523) a work proving "That Jesus Christ was a born Jew." Later when "the stiff-necked generation" of Hebrews refused to follow he lost all patience though not all tolerance. "'The famous remark that Lutheran-anism led to Calvinism, Calvinism to Unitarianism, Unitarianism to Sab-batarianism and Sabbatarianism to Judaism," has some basis of truth, and represented a fear that the Reforma-tion would finally develop into a Jew- PASSOVER PREPARATIONS IN RUSSIA INVOKE ANGER OF COMMUNIST PRESS RIGA (J. T. A.)-The extensive. preparations of the Jewish communi-ties in Soviet Russia for the celebra-tion this year of the Passover festival has attracted the attention of the Communist press. M. Lwein, a Communist, writing in, the "Emes," urges the Jewish sectione of the Communist party to exercise greater control over the work of the Kehillath in view of the fact that these organizations develop an extensive re-ligious activity. The "Emes" reports that even the state co-operatives are advertising the sale of Passover articles. The Mos-cow co-operative has ordered the im-portation from Poland of Haggadeth in red covers. The Invalids' Co-operative has of-fered for sale a supply of Passover dishes and has distributed to its cus-tomers directions for arranging the Passover service. ITALIAN CO-OPERATIVES TO ERECT LUZZATTI MONUMENT ROME (J. T. A.)-The memory of Luigi Luzzatti, late Italian Jewish statesman, will be honored by the erection of a monument. The Federation of Italian Co-opera-tives decided to erect a monument to Luzzatti in the city of Venice, Luz-zatti's birthplace. It is probable that Henry Glicen-stein, famous Polish Jewish sculptor, will be commissioned to design the monument. ish revival. "But in each case the national element triumphed. Paul's movement became Roman; Moham-med's, Arabic-Semitic; Luther's, Ger-man- Teutonic; Judaism remained un-deviatingly Jewish." Out of the multitude of dissenting groups in the history of Christianity, Dr. Newman selects especially some eight or ten of the most important, showing in each case its relation to Jewish teachers or prophets. In read-ing these ancient records, one is im-pressed by the degree to which Hebrew tradition an dopinion has en-tered into the warp and woof of ortho-doxy, as well as into that of the vari-ous religious reforms, called heresies, which have sprung from it. This fact is clearly set forth in a short chapter on the scope of Jewish influence on Christendom. After an enumeration of various evidences of this our author asserts: "In the growth of political-religious liberalism and law, Jewish elements have been present; thus, the Mosaic legal system has played a part in the growth of republican government in England and America, and in the evo-lution of international law; moreover Old Testament teachings and the par-ticipation of individual Jews have con-tributed to the rise and spread of many modern movements of political-economic and social reform. Finally Judaism and individual Jews have been influential in the growth of modern rationalism and free thought, making for the convergence of the ideals of what is styled "Liberal Christianity" and "Liberal Judaism." There is no sphere of the thought-life of Western Christendom in which Jewish influence, either literary or personal, cannot be found." This large volume, compact with re-sults of Biblical scholarship, and everywhere actuated by the most com-plete tolerance, is to be most highly commended to all interested in his-torical and religious truth. ANTI-PASSOVER CAMPAIGN "IN-DOOR SPORT" OF JEWISH COMMUNISTS IN RUSSIA MOSCOW (J. T. A.)-An intensive anti-Passover campaign was carried on by the Jewish section of the Com-munist party, in accordance with a decision taken by the last Yevsektzia conference to strengthen the fight against clericalism. The anti-Passover campaign this year is different from the previous anti-religious campaigns in that it was carried on indoors. In all schools, two days were devoted to explaining the Passover legends. For the Seder nights, lectures of an anti-religious nature were arranged and films of revolutionary holidays were exhibited. The lecturers presented what they claimed to be an outline of the Tal-mudic intentions of the clergy and urged the formation of permanent atheist circles. The Trade Unions gave financial aid to the anti-religious meetings in the workmen's clubs. OPEN SECOND LIBERAL SYNA-GOGUE IN LONDON LONDON (J. T. A.)-The second Liberal Jewish Synagogue in London was opened this Passover. The synagogue is located on Bel-fast Road. Rabbi Mattuck officiated at the services and Claude G. Monte-fiore and Miss Lily Montagu delivered addresses, welcoming the opening of the Second Liberal Synagogue as an indication of the further development of Liberal Judaism in England. -- - I - I i I I I - - -- --
