The almost complete lack of new flotations this week,.following a month in which very few new issues were of-fered, has assisted in producing a strong market for listed bonds which comprise the only channel at present for. placing investment funds. The bond market has never kept pace with the decline in interest rates and is now making up some of the lost ground in this direction. Naturally enough, a good bond yielding 51/2 to 6 per cent looks cheap at a time when money rules from 4 to 5 per cent,' and when such a situation holds over any period of time there is bound to be a readjust-ment of values in the bond list. Al-though a good demand has existed throughout the week for all classes of issues, the most conspicuous advances have occurred in higher yield bonds which might be arbitrarily termed sec-ond and third-class. Such securities as Missouri, Kansas and Texas adjust-ment 5s, Frisco income 6s, Seaboard Air Line 6s, the junior bonds of the St. Paul, and others of similar char-acter underwent very substantial ad-vances and many of them sold at new high prices for the year. Several convertible issues also sold up sub-stantially, due to advances in their stocks. LEGAL DIFFICULTIES. A colored woman one day visited the court house in a Tennessee town and said to the judge: "Is. you-all the reperbate judge?" "I am the Judge of Probate, mfammy." "I'se come to you-all 'cause I'se in trubble. Mah man-he's done died detested, and I'se got t'ree little in-fidels, so I'se cum to be appointed der execootioner." Chicago banks, as a whole have not followed the lead of a few institutions in reducing rates on collateral -loans. Accommodations of this character cost from 41/2 to 5 per cent, with 43/4 per cent a fair average although the bulk of smaller loans carry 5 per cent. Over the counter business ranges from 5 to 51/2 per cent and commercial paper is steady at 4 to 4/2 per cent for the best names without any great volume of transactions. The future of ,money, particularly in this market, is bound up very closely with development in the agricultural districts which have been liquidating consistently for some time. If this process continues it will serve to offset a greater prospective demand for industrial loans and serve to hold interest rates around current levels. Although the crop moving period is always an influence in the direction of a stronger money market, it is not thought likely that it will produce any very noticeable effect.this year.
