London (J. C. B.)-The Reverend Bouquet of the famous Westminster Abbey said in a sermon that the fourth commandment is not binding upon Christians. Sunday is no Sabbath, he said. If a Christian wants to observe the Sabbath, then he should also observe the food laws and the entire Mosaic code, which Christianity re-jected, the Rev. Bouquet declared. Beginning Tuesday, Straus Brothers Company, 10 South La Salle street, will bring out a City real estate bond issue at least once a week for an in-definite period, according to Irving Jacobs, secretary and treasurer. The announcement comes close upon the transfer of the company's central headquarters from Ligonier, Ind., to Chicago, made imperative by the needs of the business. The firm plans to extend its activities and has doubled its selling force with this end in view. This marks a new epoch in the history of a house that has grown from in-significant beginnings more than 62 years ago and now has a capital and surplus in excess of $4,500,000. In 1857 Jacobs, Mathias and Frederick Straus, then recent emigrants from Germany, opened a little general merchandise store at Ligonier, Ind. Business prospered, and as time went by the farmers who traded at the store were often accommodated for small loans; so it was that the Straus broth-ers soon found that they were doing a more important farm loan than retail merchandising business. They gave up their store and opened a bank, with capital and surplus of a few thousand dollars. Today they hold the control- Sling interest in eight rural banks and * their general investment business centered in Chicago has branch offices in Ligonier, Fort Wayne, Detroit and Minneapolis. The character of their investment business has changed with Sthe general expansion of the house. SAlthough farm mortgage bonds are still an important item for them, other classes of bonds-as for instance City * real estate issues have assumed an even greater importance. The concern now handles all kinds of investment securities. Simon J. Straus is presi-dent. Vienna (J. T. A. The petition makes special mention of the communists who have been con-demned to death for anti-state activ-ity. General Popovici has now replied to the petition categorically rejecting the request made. "I am Bessarabia," he said, "and I intend to have nothing to do with any amnesties." The "Adverul" of Bucharest reports that the Jewish socialist Bronstein has notwithstanding the amnesty been or-dered by General Popovici to be exe-cuted. RELIEF COMMITTEE CONVENTION SATURDAY. Philadelphia.-The People's Relief committee will hold a convention here beginning tomorrow. Reports of con-ditions in Europe as they affect Jews will be heard. Warburg of the Joint Dis-tribution Committee, who is now abroad, is expected back in time to address the committee. A campaign for a million dollars is being conducted now by the commit-tee, the money to be used for the purchase of supplies for workers in Russia and the Ukrainia.
