A Jewish athletic club is being formed in Glasgow, Scotland. PROMINENT JOHANNESBURG JEW DIES. London (J. T. A., June 24)-David Stanfield, one of the leaders of the Jewish Community of Johannesburg, died there yesterday. Mr. Stanfield has been active in the matter of Ukrainian refugees and has been instrumental in transferring a number of these to South Africa. POGROM AGITATION GROWS IN GALICIA. Danzig (J. T. A.)-It is reported from Lemberg that anti-Semitic agita-tion calling for pogroms upon Jews has increased considerably in the last few weeks. Numerous proclamations are being distributed urging the Gentile population to attack Jews. The Jewish population is in a very perturbed con-dition.' S., writing in the Palestine weekly, says: With the Jews the probem of il-literacy is practically negligible. About 90 per cent of all children be-tween six and fourteen are in school, and of those not now in school all the boys and some of the girls have at-tended school long enough to be able to read and write. Perhaps there may be some compensation for the lack of funds in the good will and co-operative effort that it awakens. That this will be sympathetic and just is insured by the man chosen to undertake the task. Dr. Alexander Dushkii is a young educator who com-bines a thorough Hebraic training with modern general and pedagogic learn-ing, and an enthusiasm for newest ideals of natural and "pragmatic" ed-ucation with a love and respect for the treasures of Hebrew tradition. Education in Palestine is still only voluntary, and must remain so until the Government will have vast sums at its disposal. Until one can provide, free of cost to the individual all the schools that are needed, one cannot make laws compelling education. A WISE KID. A pageant depicting the contribu-tions of the Hebrew race to America was staged in Worcester, Mass., June 17-18 as part of the People's Pilgrim Pageant. BACK TO THE SYNAGOG. The Back to the Synagog Movement which was launched by the New York branch of the United Synagog among non-synagogual groups a few weeks ago when the I. 0. B. A. unanimously endorsed the movement at their an-nual convention in Atlantic City will be continued. Boston University has conferred the degree of Master of Laws upon Joseph G.
