INFORMATION ABOUT TELEPHONE SERVICE HOW TO USE THE TELEPHONE When using the telephone, speak distinctly in a moderate tone of voice. To recall the operator on a Common Battery tele¬ phone (one whtre you signal the operator by lift¬ ing the receiver from the hook) move the receiver hook slowly up and down three or four times. To recall the operator on a Magneto telephone (one where you signal the operator by turning a crank) _ hang up the receiver and give the handle one quick turn. EXCHANGE SERVICE Business service is furnished for use of subscribers and their employees only in their business and for such extra name users on the same premises as may be contracted for by the subscribers. Residence service is furnished for the _ use of sub¬ scribers and their families only at their residences and for such extra name users on the same premises as may be contracted for by the subscribers. TELEPHONE SERVICE CALLS Call "Information" for names not listed in this directory. Call "Supervisor" to report unsatisfactory handling of your calls. Call "Repair Service" when your telephone is out of order. Call your Business Office, Naperville 9981, for all matters relating to new telephone service, removals, termination of service, directory listings, adjustments of accounts, collection of bills, etc. PARTY LINES All subscribers on the line have equal rights; for that reason calls should be reasonably limited in length of conversation. To make for efficient service and _ to prevent annoyance to others on the line the following rules should be observed: When you wish to call, remove the receiver and listen. If the Jine is in use, restore the receiver to the hook and wait for those using the line to finish. Always answer your own signal. If there is any con¬ fusion about the rings, report the facts to the Chief Operator. INFORMATION ABOUT OUT-OF-TOWN CALLS CALLS TO NEARBY POINTS HANDLED BY YOUR OPERATOR Station-to-Station calls to the nearby points shown below are handled by your local operator. It is not necessary to call "Long: Distance." Simply give your operator the number desired and stay on the line un> til you are connected. The initial talking period is five minutes with the exception of Station-to-Station rates of 30 cents or more where the initial talking period is three minutes. Out-of'town calls are STATION-TO-STATION CALLS--such calls are for ANYONE WHO ANSWERS at the distant tele¬ phone. To place a Station-to-Station call ask for "Long Dis¬ tance." Give the Long Distance operator the name of the place and the telephone number you are calling as, "Detroit, Michigan, Cadillac 9900." If you do not know ihe number, say, for example, "Detroit, Michigan, any¬ one at the residence of John Brown, 4000 Highland Blvd." Then if you are asked to hold the line under¬ stand that your number will be requested while the call is being completed at the distant place. Station-to-Station rates are lower than Person-to Person rates. These rates are reduced between 7:00 P.M. and 4:30 A.M. (Night Rates) and all day Sunday if the initial period rate exceeds 35 cents. The time of day at the originating point when conversa¬ tion starts determines whether the Day or Night rate applies. of two general classes: PERSON-TO-PERSON CALLS—such calls are for A SPECIFIED PERSON at the distant telephone (or a particular extension or department reached through a Private Branch Exchange). To place a Person-to-Person call ask for "Long Dis¬ tance. Give the Long Distance operator the name of the place, the telephone number, and the name of the person with whom you wish to talk as, "Detroit, Michigan, Cadillac 9900, John Brown." If you do not know the number, say, for example, "Detroit, Michigan, John Brown of John Brown and Co., 1000 Cass Street." Then if you are asked to hold the line understand that your number will be requested while the call is being completed at the distant place. Person-to-Person rates are somewhat higher than Station-to-Station rates. These rates are reduced be¬ tween 7:00 P.M. and 4:30 A.M. (Night Rates) and all day Sunday if the initial period rate exceeds 50 cents. The time of day at the originating point when con« versation _ starts determines whether the Day or Night rate applies. Charges are computed from the time conversation with the specified person at the distant telephone begins. A Report Charge is made on a Person-to-Person call if the distant telephone is reached, the desired person is not available, and the call is not later completed. Charges begin when the distant telephone is answered. There are no Report (Charges on Station-to-Station calls except on Collect Calls when conversation does not take place the first time the distant station is reached. COLLECT CALLS—If you ask the Long Distance operator at the time the call is,placed, she will try to arrange to have the charges billed to the called party. This can be done on Station-to-Station or Person-to-Person calls without additional charge, except that Special Collect rates apply to Station-to-Station Collect Calls where the initial rate is 20 cents or less. If the called party refuses to accept the charge, a Report Charge will be made unless the call is then com* pleted as a paid message. The billing of charges to the called party is not permitted on calls to points in Mexico nor on Overseas calls except to Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
